When it comes to fan-favorite television series, producer Ryan Murphy has been among the masterminds behind several.
Murphy has contributed to creating beloved shows such as Dahmer, American Horror Story, and Glee. Currently, the creator has been working for Netflix, but an ongoing negotiation with Disney hints that he could be leaving soon.
According to a Bloomberg article, Murphy, a “superstar TV show creator,” has been negotiating contract details with Disney for the past year. According to the article, many of the details are said to have been solidified before the writer’s strike began in May of 2023. People familiar with the matter refused to comment.
Bloomberg said that Murphy joining Disney would be a “homecoming of sorts,” as he’d be reunited with the creatives who assisted him in producing hit television shows like American Horror Story and Glee.
The majority of Murphy’s career was spent working for Fox alongside Dana Walden, who currently serves as the co-chair of Disney Entertainment. Walden joined the team at Disney when the company bought out Fox’s entertainment assets, while Murphy left Fox for Netflix at this time. According to many critics, Murphy’s success dwindled once he no longer worked with Walden, who is considered to be one of the most prolific producers in modern television.
While the details of Murphy’s contract with Disney aren’t yet known, and might not even be finalized at this time, Disney does own the majority of Murphy’s catalogue, which could allow Disney to him out of future royalties as part of the deal.
Disney announced at the Q1 earnings call for 2023 that costs would be cut within the company’s entertainment sector, which led to thousands of job cuts across the company, but was highly focused on entertainment roles. Taking this into consideration, it will be interesting to see the terms of Murphy’s deal if/when he joins the team of writers and producers at Disney.
