Paul Reubens, the actor most well-known for portraying the beloved Pee-Wee Herman, has passed away.
The news was shared via the official Pee-Wee Herman Facebook account:
Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness. Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.
Reubens was not only legendary for portraying the children’s TV character (which started as a very not-family-friendly act years earlier, believe it or not), but in the realm of Disney Parks, he also left an indelible mark. His portrayal of Captain Rex (or RX-24) on the original Star Tours led the character to become one of the most iconic in the history of themed entertainment. The character was so beloved that it not only received an homage in Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, but Reubens returned to voice the character again for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, where the droid returned as DJ Rex (R-3X) in Ola’s Cantina.
Reubens was also part of the film portions of the original Backlot Tour at the Disney-MGM Studios, of course as the Pee-Wee Herman character.
His Disney voice acting credits over his career also included:
- TRON Uprising
- Teacher’s Pet
- Hercules (TV Series)
- The Nightmare Before Christmas
- Flight of the Navigator
Having grown up with Pee-Wee’s Playhouse & Star Tours, it is with great sadness that we share this news. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family & friends of Paul Reuben’s at this time.
