Disney has quite a few different films coming out in the near future.
One of the newest ones coming out soon is the Haunted Mansion film on July 28th, and we know that Toy Story is coming back into theaters for a limited time. However, it seems that the release dates of multiple upcoming films could be affected due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
For quick context, WGA is the Writer’s Guild of America, and SAG-AFTRA stands for Screen Actor’s Guild — American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Basically, the writers and actors who bring to life the majority of the films you see in theaters and on your streaming services. The WGA has been on strike since May 2nd, and SAG joined them in fighting for regulation of AI (artificial intelligence), and proper residuals for projects on streaming services, among other requests, on July 14th.
This has already impacted a few of Disney’s films, as actors couldn’t attend the premiere of Haunted Mansion due to union regulations during the strike, but now it seems many more films may be impacted due to this strike regulation. According to Bloomberg, films like Poor Things, Next Goal Wins, Wish, and Magazine Dreams that are set to release this year could be delayed.
According to CBR, Marvel’s Captain Marvel sequel could also be delayed past its current set November opening date. But these films are done, so why hold off on the releases? Disney wants the actors and creative teams to be able to promote the films ahead, and during their releases, and due to strike regulations for the actors and writers, it’s not allowed during the strike. Many other film creatives, like cinematographers, directors, and more, are also standing beside the unions in solidarity, meaning they won’t promote the films out of choice.
Disney has not confirmed if any of these film releases will be delayed at this time, talks are only just beginning. We’ll be sure to keep you updated with all the latest Disney media news here, so stay tuned to DFB!
