New merchandise inspired by the upcoming “Haunted Mansion” movie is available at Disneyland. While this merch features elements of the ride, some details make it clear they take direct inspiration from the new film.
Hatbox Ghost Long-Sleeved Shirt – $44.99
This long-sleeved shirt has tie-dye stripes of gray and white. Jared Leto’s Hatbox Ghost is pictured across the front, with the Haunted Mansion below him.
Haunted Mansion Tee – $26.99
This red tie-dye tee features a white image of the Haunted Mansion on the chest, with tree branches stretching out of a shield logo in front of it.
The shield logo is similar to the ride’s sign. But instead of “HM” or “Haunted Mansion,” it features what looks like a stylized “G.” This might stand for Gracey, as in Master Gracey, a Haunted Mansion character originally referenced on a tombstone in the ride’s graveyard. Over the years, Gracey has evolved to be considered the former owner of the mansion and was a featured character in 2003’s “The Haunted Mansion” film.
The new film’s logo is in white on the tee’s left sleeve.
Haunted Mansion Mug – $19.99
The mug is also red, with the same design as the shirt but in black.
The inside is also red, with an “HM” logo printed in black.
The handle is black.
The opposite side of the mug features several of the Mansion’s ghosts, including the Hatbox Ghost and the Bride, Constance Hatchaway.
The Haunted Mansion sign and a candle-holding gargoyle are behind the ghosts.
The mug is stoneware and 369 mL / 13 oz.
The shirts and the mug were in Port Royal.
Harriet’s House of Magic Keychain – $14.99
This keychain includes three bag charms on a bronze lobster claw clip.
The first charm is a key with the G shield logo on the handle. The “teeth” are the shape of the Haunted Mansion.
An eye-shaped charm reads “Harriet’s House of Magic and Intuition” with the phone number 504-555-0153. The logo is black, white, yellow, and red.
In “Haunted Mansion,” Harriet is a psychic portrayed by Tiffany Haddish.
The third charm is the same “HM” logo from inside the mug.
This keychain and the hat below were in Elias & Co.
Haunted Mansion Ball Cap – $29.99
The ball cap has a red brim and a black pleather front. Three metal rivets are on each corner of the brim.
A patch on the pleather panel is a crest for “Gracey Manor,” featuring a metal “GM.” The mansion was also known as Gracey Manor in the 2003 film.
A chain is below the patch, and branch details are debossed against the pleather.
The back of the hat is black fabric with red embroidery around the ventilation holes.
The underside of the brim is white with a red pattern reminiscent of the Haunted Mansion’s wallpaper.
Haunted Mansion Plate Set – $24.99
Finally, we found this plate set in Gone Hollywood. It actually appears to be inspired directly by the ride instead of the film.
The set includes two plates — one small and one large — wrapped in a black ribbon.
The small plate has a white center. The border has black and teal-green stripes. The largest black stripe features gray dragons.
The large plate also has a white center, and a border of diagonal black and green stripes.
Both plates are white on the bottom.
The center of the small plate features an image from the wallpaper and the big plate features an “HM” logo.
New ‘Haunted Mansion’ Movie
The upcoming “Haunted Mansion” film follows a doctor (Rosario Dawson) and her 9-year-old son (Chase Dillon) moving into a haunted abode in New Orleans. Dawson’s character ends up calling in a priest (Owen Wilson) to exorcise the manor. They also get help from a widowed scientist-turned-failed-paranormal expert (LaKeith Stanfield), a French Quarter psychic (Tiffany Haddish), and a historian (Danny DeVito).
Jamie Lee Curtis portrays Madame Leota, and Jared Leto serves as the Hatbox Ghost. Curtis called the film “modern, fresh, old-fashioned, and scary, but not scary like a monster movie. It’s scary, like a Disney ride, and funny. If you go on that ride, there’s a lot of humor as well as the scary, ghost-y stuff.”
Curtis, Wilson, and Stanfield briefly worked the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland to promote the film.
During the “Studio Showcase Day 1: Celebrate the Magic of Disney and Pixar” panel at the D23 Expo 2022 in Anaheim, Disney debuted the “Haunted Mansion” trailer. Director Justin Simien took to the stage to speak about the project and detail some of the cameos audiences can expect from Winona Ryder, Dan Levy, Hasan Minhaj, and more.
Walt Disney Studios will present a behind-the-scenes look at “Haunted Mansion” during Midsummer Scream — Halloween & Horror Convention in Long Beach, California, at the end of July.
Zillow shared a behind-the-scenes look at the various movie sets in a fictional “listing” for the haunted abode.
Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, the film’s Disneyland Resort premiere will be a fan event, with D23 Gold Members getting free access. “Haunted Mansion” will be in theaters on July 28, 2023. You can watch the trailer below:
The Haunted Mansion
This classic Disney attraction can now be found at several Disney Parks around the world. The first iteration opened in 1969 at Disneyland as part of the New Orleans Square expansion. Two years later, it was an opening day attraction in Liberty Square at Magic Kingdom, and in 1983, it was an opening day attraction at Tokyo Disneyland, too.
The Disneyland Paris version of Haunted Mansion is named Phantom Manor, while at Hong Kong Disneyland, Mystic Manor is a completely different attraction that draws some inspiration from the original whilst avoiding references to the afterlife out of respect toward traditional Chinese cultural precedent.
Haunted Mansion is full of famous ghostly characters and spirits like Madame Leota, the Bride, the subjects of the stretching room portraits, and the Hatbox Ghost.
The Hatbox Ghost was in the original Disneyland Haunted Mansion on opening day. Technology had not quite caught up to the ghost’s vanishing and appearing head, however, so the effect only lasted a few weeks before disappearing for nearly 50 years.
This effect returned to the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland in 2015. He appears at the end of the attic scene, after the Bride “greets” guests. The Hatbox Ghost will soon be installed in the Magic Kingdom version of the Haunted Mansion, too.
