Disney is usually at the forefront when it comes to technology.
If you’ve been on Rise of the Resistance, you’ll know just how far the company pushes the envelope in creating interactive experiences that feel, more or less, real. Or maybe you’ve seen that stuntronic Spider-Man soaring over buildings in Disney California Adventure’s Avengers Campus? Or you saw that amazing tech shown off recently that lets you chat with a “real” Tinker Bell. But there’s one area of technology where Disney seems to be failing … and that’s with guacamole.
Yep, we said guacamole. Disney hasn’t embraced guacamole tech yet, and that’s a shame. Okay, if you’re scratching your head now and wondering just what we’re talking about, we’ll tell you. According to CNN, Chipotle is testing a robot called “Autocado” designed to make guacamole, or at least do the more tedious tasks that come with making guacamole like cutting, coring, and peeling avocados.
The Autocado prototype looks more like a refrigerator than a robot, but it’s just another example of how restaurants are seeking out new technologies to help trim costs during a time when many are also being hit with labor shortages. Chipotle has said that the robot will not cause a loss in jobs, though. The idea is that employees will work with the robot to make the whole guacamole process faster. An actual human will still mash the avocados with other ingredients like lime juice, salt, and jalapenos.
Now, we think Disney has fallen behind on the technology front because there is no Autcado at any of the places that serve guacamole in Disney World, like at La Cava del Tequila (or any of the other restaurants at EPCOT’s Mexico Pavilion). Our team might have even agreed that the guacamole served at Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe in Magic Kingdom could benefit from a robot making it.
On the West Coast, where Disney has a flying Spider-Man robot that performs regularly for guests, the guacamole is still made completely by hand at your table at Tortilla Joe’s in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney. We’ll have to admit when we first learned about Autocado, we thought about a humanoid robot serving up guac tableside there. But the concept of having a robot handling part of the tasks of making guacamole is intriguing.
Okay, back to Autacado. So here’s how it works: An employee loads the machine with up to 25 pounds of avocados. They’re sliced, peeled, cored, and collected into a bowl. This isn’t the first avocado-peeling machine to ever exist, but this particular one is proprietary to Chipotle. So why hasn’t Disney created one for themselves? Automation is becoming more present in restaurants all over the world, after all.
We guess we’ll have to wait and see if Disney embraces similar technology or starts adopting other automation devices for its many restaurants’ kitchens. If we hear of anything cool, we’ll be sure to let you know, so stay tuned to DFB for more.
