The Disney Gallery at Disneyland is now displaying the Madame Leota costume worn by Jamie Lee Curtis in “Haunted Mansion,” as well as the medium’s crystal ball and concept art for the film.
Madame Leota Costume
Though Madame Leota is most known for being a floating head inside a crystal ball, she does appear briefly in her mortal state in “Haunted Mansion.”
She wears an elaborate red robe with gem-encrusted trim, and a large circular headdress.
The dress is embroidered with white beads and flower designs.
The mannequin is holding Leota’s peacock feather fan.
The headdress is also embroidered and has strings of beads hanging from it. White fringe dangles across the forehead.
The costume is on display in front of a purple Haunted Mansion wallpaper backdrop.
Her (headless) crystal ball and metal stand are also in the case.
Haunted Mansion Concept Art
The framed concept art shows different scene designs for Gracey Manor in “Haunted Mansion.”
There are small descriptions of each scene, with the foyer described as featuring “elaborately carved woodwork, striking Victorian wallpaper and unusual artwork.”
The hallway and stairs are home to a creepy suit of armor featured in the film.
Another angle of the entrance foyer shows a “seemingly endless hallway” with the suit of armor in the distance.
A closer look reveals one of the mansion’s giant paintings hanging by the staircase.
The dining room looks just like it’s attraction counterpart, with large glass windows and chandeliers.
This artwork showcases the giant pipe organ.
The manor’s entrance gate is modeled after the entrance to the Disneyland attraction.
The attic is a major set piece on The Haunted Mansion attraction and appears in the film, too.
New ‘Haunted Mansion’ Movie
The new “Haunted Mansion” movie hit theaters on July 28. It’s directed by Justin Simien from a screenplay by Katie Dippold, and produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich.
The film follows astrophysicist-turned-paranormal expert Ben (LaKeith Stanfield) after being recruited by Father Kent (Owen Wilson) to help mother Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her son Travis (Chase Dillon) solve their haunted house problem. They also get the help of medium Harriet (Tiffany Haddish) and Professor Bruce Davis (Danny DeVito). Jared Leto portrays the Hatbox Ghost. Hasan Minhaj, Daniel Levy, and Winona Ryder make cameo appearances.
“Haunted Mansion” has had a less-than-successful opening weekend but EVP of Disney’s theatrical distribution, Tony Chambers, is hopeful it will catch up in the next few weeks. “We’ve got a relatively clear runway for the next four weeks,” he said.
