Halloween — or should we say “Haul-O-Ween” — decorations have parked in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure just in time for the start of spooky season. With the seasonal Haul-O-Ween overlay, the land themed to an old-time Route 66 stopping point gives new meaning to the phrase phrase “ghost town.”
Haul-O-Ween Decorations
Ramone’s House of Body Art has received a festive facelift; “Cars” themed papel picado hangs from the top of the building’s central structure to its surrounding squared archways. The multi-colored traditional Mexican decorations with a “Cars” twist were complemented by a Día de los Muertos-inspired decorative car in front of the building in years past, but that decoration was not present as of August 18. Many decorations are not up yet, and Halloween celebrations don’t kick off until August 29.
There’s also some new theming outside of Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters. The leaning tire structure outside the Luigi’s Casa Della Tires queue building has been updated; orange stripes have been added to the horizontal tires, and orange rims have been placed inside the vertical ones, giving the tires a monstrous appearance.
During the Halloween season, the attraction becomes Luigi’s Honkin Haul-O-Ween. This version of the ride operates from September 1 to October 31 this year.
The Radiator Springs Curios gift shop now sports purposefully dirty seasonal signs that read “Happy Haul-O-Ween,” “Tarot Cars,” and “Shrunken Hoods,” among other puns. A metallic black cut-out of a truck donning a witch hat and riding on (or driving?) a broom now occupies the building’s central signage.
A rusted truck in front of the shop finds itself encompassing a tree, its mangled grill and mirrors giving it the appearance of a ghostly face.
A wooden sign on the side of Radiator Springs Curios reads “Trunk or Treat” in a festive orange font. A black car with a fang-lined smile looks upon guests as they pass by.
More updated billboards appear around the land. This one reads “Get Your Hex on Route 66” in the same orange type.
Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree transforms into Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree throughout the Halloween season. The attraction’s entrance has been updated accordingly; bat wings have been added to the “Tow Mater Towing & Salvage” sign, and matching winged trucks now stick out from atop the ride marker.
A Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree sign with a ghostly aura appears to its left. Like Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween, Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree is offered from September 1 through October 31.
The stroller parking section in front of the attraction now features monstrous-looking trucks with their grills open wide, and the ride’s queue has been turned into a graveyard of makeshift tombstones with morbid car puns.
The area surrounding Sarge’s Surplus Hut has been taken over by spider-like decorations on either side of the building.
The creatures have made a home out of the shop in the form of bright green spider web decorations on the building’s roof.
Ghostly decorations have been added to the signage of Filmmore’s Taste-In.
Other general holiday theming, such as festively-colored banners and miscellaneous “Cars” themed decor, appear around the land.
Holidays at Cars Land
Cars Land, based on Pixar’s popular “Cars” franchise, opened in Disney California Adventure in 2012. It receives two intricately-themed holiday overlays; one themed to Halloween, and the other to Christmas. Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters and Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree receive additional festive overlays during the holiday season, becoming Luigi’s Joy to the Whirl and Mater’s Jungle Jamboree, respectively.
