What comes to mind when you hear the word “summer?” My nostalgic list includes family reunions, orange popsicles, and, of course, summer camp. There is no better way to recall the carefree days of childhood than tapping into the distinctive summer camp vibe at Disney’s Pop Century, the resort that celebrates past decades from the 1950s through the 1990s. Just like at camp, you want to take full advantage of everything this resort has to offer.
Rise & Shine
Everything POP Dining, with its classic cafeteria-style atmosphere, opens daily at 7:00 AM. The famous Mickey-shaped waffles are available each morning. Other hearty offerings include breakfast platters, omelets, a variety of grab-and-go items, and more.
Outdoor Adventures
For those that enjoy a brisk walk or jog, there is a 1.29-mile trail around Hourglass Lake. If you prefer a more leisurely pace with stops along the way, meander down the sidewalks of the resort and read the signs featuring each year and corresponding facts. This is an enjoyable excursion with teens that can spur on conversations like “what was Y2K?” and “you are older than MTV?” Younger kids take delight in visiting the oversized character statues and giant replicas of toys interspersed among the buildings.
Swimming
Pop Century offers a choice of several one-of-a-kind swimming pools. The largest is the quintessential 1960s Hippy Dippy Pool with its flower-shaped petal spray jets. Step back into the 1950s at the Bowling Pool, uniquely designed to resemble a bowling pin. On the other hand, if the 1990s are more your style, the Computer Pool showcasing a retro keypad and floppy disc could be your best bet.
Lunch
Head back to Everything POP for a sandwich, or perhaps hop on the Disney Skyliner to grab a bite to eat at Disney’s Caribbean Beach or Riviera Resort, just a short ride away. The Skyliner can also take you to Hollywood Studios or EPCOT for a character dining experience or international fare from the World Showcase.
Games & Crafts
Pac-Man anyone? Visit the Fast Forward Arcade inside Classic Hall to play some of your favorite games from yesteryear. Mickey Tie Dye and Make Your Own Yo-Yo are activities available during July (additional charge required). Boombox Bingo and Night Time Trivia are scheduled on alternating days at Petals Pool Bar.
Campfire
Roasting marshmallows is always a nightly ritual at summer camp. Pop Century carries on this tradition with a campfire every evening located near the Surfer Goofy area.
Movie Under the Stars
There is nothing more fun than extending the lazy days of summer well into the evenings after sunset. A Disney movie plays on the big screen at the Hippy Dippy Pool area each night starting at 8:30 PM.
Lights Out
All good things must come to an end, and a restful night’s sleep is essential to tackle the next big day at the parks. Consider stopping by Petals Pool Bar to take a frozen treat back to the room for a late night snack. Our family favorite is the strawberry smoothie.
We all know that camp counselors are the ones who keep things running like clockwork and ensure a great day for all. Disney cast members fulfill this same role, providing efficient and outstanding service to make each guest’s stay a memorable one. Please remember to say thank you and show your appreciation for their dedication.
Pop Century is affectionately known as the “Remember When” resort. Chances are you will look back on your stay with such fondness and nostalgia that a return visit will be a must.
