The New Disney Task Force That Could CHANGE the Company

There have been a LOT of changes at Disney over the past year…and we know, it can be overwhelming!

Between the return of Bob Iger as the company’s CEO and the ongoing battle between Disney and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (formerly known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District), the Walt Disney Company has been in the spotlight. Another controversial topic that the company has been involved with is artificial intelligence (A.I.) and now there’s a new update you should know about.

According to Reuters, Disney has created a task force that will study A.I. and how it can be applied across their entertainment.

The group actually launched earlier this year before the writers’ strike going on in Hollywood, but now the group is trying to develop A.I. applications within Disney and form partnerships with startups.

There are currently 11 job openings that are seeking applicants with “expertise in artificial intelligence or machine learning.” According to the job descriptions, they will touch virtually every corner of the company including Walt Disney Studios, the theme parks and Walt Disney Imagineering, and Disney-branded television and advertising, which is looking to build a “next-generation” A.I.-powered ad system.

Here’s a look at one of those job listings — this one is for the role of R&D Imagineer Senior – Generative Artificial Intelligence.

This comes after Disney was recently criticized for using A.I. to create the intro in the new Marvel show called Secret Invasionaccording to Variety.

Not everyone is against Disney’s use of A.I. — one source reporting to Reuters said media companies like Disney must figure out A.I. or risk obsolescence. This advocate sees A.I. as a tool that helps control the rising costs of movie and TV production, which can exceed $300 million for huge films like The Little Mermaid and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Some of Disney’s latest releases have struggled at the box office making it more difficult to break even on how much the movie cost to make.

We’ll continue to keep you updated on how Disney could be using A.I. so stay tuned for updates.
