5 Lies Everyone Believes About Rides in Disney World

To the uninitiated, Disney World may sound like a place just for kids. After all, the official mascot is a mouse, and some of the most popular attractions live in a place called “Magic Kingdom.” OK, so from a distance, this might not seem like a place for adults, but that is just one of the MANY lies we hear about Disney World.

The truth is, there’s a lot you might not know about Disney World — especially if you haven’t been to the parks in a long time. But fear not! We’re here to correct a few common LIES people believe about Disney World rides. Prepare to have your mind blown.

1. Lie: All Disney World Rides are BORING!

Yes, yes, we know — “it’s a small world” is the butt of many jokes. Fine, this ride may not be for everyone. But that doesn’t mean that all Disney World rides are retro, slow-moving time capsules in need of an update. (We still love you, though “it’s a small world”).

This ride is a CLASSIC!

Disney World actually has several impressive thrill rides, like the new Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind attraction in EPCOT and TRON: Lightcycle / Run in Magic Kingdom. Trust us, there are some speedy coasters in the parks, too!

2. Lie: Temporary Ride Closure = BROKEN

Have you ever been on the Haunted Mansion attraction when your Doombuggy is temporarily stopped? Maybe your journey through Paris was interrupted during Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. Well, many people automatically assume that this means some part of the ride broke down, but that’s not always the case!

The truth is, rides can be stopped for a number of reasons — many of which do NOT involve any sort of technical issue! If someone drops a pair of Minnie ears on the track, for example, a ride may have to stop for safety reasons. Or, if a guest needs a little extra time to get in or out of a ride vehicle, Cast Members may slow/stop the ride. The point is, there are tons of reasons Cast Members may have to shut down a ride.

3. Lie: Those Posted Wait Times are 100% Accurate

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Disney’s attraction wait times may not always be accurate.

We’ve seen some HIGH wait times in the past

At the end of the night, you may see some slightly inflated wait times prior to park close. Often, you’ll find yourself moving through those standby lines faster than you might expect! Of course, this isn’t always the case, so make sure you’re willing to commit to the posted wait time. Then, if the line ends up moving quickly, it’s just a happy bonus!

4. Lie: The Single-Rider Line Will ALWAYS Be Faster Than the Standby Line

OK, this one might come as a shock. After all, the purpose of the single-rider line is to move you through the queue faster since you’re a party of one.

But there are some attractions, like Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, where the line actually moves veryyyy slowly. Believe it or not, a LOT of parties in line for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster come in even numbers, so there’s less room for the single riders to fill in those open seats.

5. Lie: Rope-Drop = Short Lines

Turns out that after years and years of telling people that rope-drop is the best way to avoid the lines, everyone listened. And when we say “everyone,” we mean EVERYONE.

Nowadays, getting up bright and early to be among the first in line isn’t so easy since EVERYONE seems to have the same idea. Instead, you might actually have better luck hopping in line later in the evening when people are heading back to their hotels or eating dinner. Check those wait times throughout the day, and over time, you’ll see that the lines slow down at night.
