A Disney World Hotel is Permanently Closing This Month

Did you know that a Disney World hotel is closing permanently this month?

Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser

Disney World has all kinds of hotels on property, ranging from the value All-Star Resorts to the incredibly luxurious Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. But there’s one hotel that’s been open for less than two years — and it’s going to be permanently closing its doors in just a couple of weeks.

The Star Wars: Galactic Starcrusier hotel opened in March 2022. This hotel is really more of an immersive experience, which lasts two days and two nights. While you’re there, you can take part in the Star Wars-themed story by interacting with characters, joining in on activities like droid racing and lightsaber training, and dining in the Crown of Corellia dining room.

The Starcruiser is sort of like a cruise, as the food and activities are included in the cost of your stay. There’s also an outing to Batuu (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) on one of the days.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Disney announced in May 2023 that, after just over a year of being in operation, the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser will be permanently closing. The final “voyage” is September 28th through the 30th.

So what went wrong with this experience? The biggest issue was the cost. This hotel is NOT cheap — prices are more comparable to a cruise vacation than a hotel room, with stays costing in the thousands. Many people just couldn’t justify the cost, and we saw lots of availability at the hotel even just a few months after it opened, which indicates that demand was slowing down.

Disney still has to run the entire production even if a “voyage” isn’t sold out, so if they’re not selling enough rooms to justify the cost of running the Starcruiser, it quickly becomes a problem.

While we’re sad to see the Galactic Starcruiser go, we’re not totally surprised that it wasn’t sustainable. While the final reservations did sell out, the price was just too high for many people. Disney hasn’t announced yet what will happen to the building once the Starcruiser closes.
