Josh D’Amaro Includes ‘Black Panther’ Wakanda as Potential Disney Parks Expansion

When discussing potential theme park expansions at Tuesday’s Investor Summit, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences & Products Josh D’Amaro referenced Wakanda from “Black Panther” as a possible expansion.

“Imagine bringing Wakanda to life,” D’Amaro said. “In terms of bringing the latest Disney-Marvel-Pixar intellectual property to the parks, we haven’t come close to scratching the surface. And we have learned that incorporating Disney I.P. increases the return on investment significantly.”

D’Amaro also referenced “Coco,” “Encanto,” and “Zootopia.” “Encanto” is set to be part of the Tropical Americas-themed land replacing DinoLand U.S.A. Also as part of that update, DINOSAUR would become an Indiana Jones ride. “It’s Tough to be a Bug” is set to be replaced with a “Zootopia” show. “Coco” was included in the original “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad” concept art.

A Wakanda area could be an expansion to Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure or an addition to a Walt Disney World theme park like Disney’s Animal Kingdom or Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Disneyland Resort is also working with California on the DisneylandForward initiative with hopes of building another theme park, skyliner, new retail locations, and more hotels. Wakanda could also be added to an international park.

D’Amaro didn’t share more details, but a Wakanda expansion is likely just a “blue sky” idea right now.

The Kingdom of Wakanda is a fictional country in East Africa and home to the Black Panther in Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In the wake of “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman’s passing in 2020, many celebrities and fans called for Disney to build a Wakanda land.
