The area immediately surrounding the Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort is undergoing some changes. We noticed portable shrubs and scrim in the area on a recent trip to the park; the arcade itself is still open.
Work In Front of Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade
Shrubs now surround the pavement leading to the Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade boardwalk which was refurbished as part of a larger Frontierland boardwalk refresh in 2021. Portable shrubs are a tool frequently used throughout Walt Disney World to block vision of ongoing construction projects; for example, shrubs nearly identical to the ones currently outside the arcade recently appeared outside of the Mission: SPACE queue as crews continue to refurbish the entry area.
Looking past the shrubs, we see green scrim covering the pavement immediately in front of the building, suggesting that refurbishment work on the pavement is taking place.
Though several entryways are blocked off due to the recently commenced work, a side entrance is still accessible. The Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade remains open, with the official Walt Disney World website not listing any closures from now through November 22 (the furthest accessible day on their current calendar).
Parts of the pavement slightly extend past the shrubs and scrim. For reference, included below is a photo of what the area typically looks like when not under construction.
Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade
Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade is aptly located in the Frontierland section of Magic Kingdom and was an opening day offering in 1971. The game transports guests to the wild, wild west and allows them to shoot at targets on objects like cactuses, trees, and tombstones. The game contains several moving targets and even a spooky crow animatronic.
A game of 35 shots at the arcade previously cost $1 but became free after the offering reopened after an extended closure in 2021.
The game appears in the Frontierland section of Disneyland Park as the Frontierland Shootin’ Exposition, while similar, though not identical, versions appear in the Frontierland and Westernland sections of Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disneyland; they’re known as Rustler Roundup Shootin’ Gallery and Westernland Shootin’ Gallery, respectively.
The recent work to the area surrounding the Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade coincides with alterations being made to the larger Frontierland area as a whole. Situated just a short distance away from the arcade is Grizzly Hall, the host of the Country Bear Jamboree. A new show will replace the original Country Bear Jamboree next year, as the “Country Bear Musical Jamboree” will see the beloved bears perform classic Disney songs in different styles of country music.
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is also currently under construction in Frontierland. The “Princess and the Frog”-inspired log flume ride will replace Splash Mountain and will be one of the land’s two major attractions (joining Big Thunder Mountain Railroad) when it opens in 2024.
