If you’ve followed DFB for a while, you know that we have a serious obsession with cheese.
We will NEVER stop telling you how much we love plastic cheese (and if we do, call a doctor because there would be something wrong with us). We’re also big fans of that Donut Grilled Cheese sandwich from Everglazed Donuts and Cold Brew. So when we discovered that Salt & Straw had put CHEESE in ice cream, well, you know we were running to Disney Springs to try it out.
Yes, one of the new flavors that Salt & Straw has available this month is Beechers Cheese with Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls. Now, here’s the thing: Beechers Cheese is a shop from Seattle that is a literal cheese heaven — this is the good stuff, y’all. And Beechers’ Flagship Cheese (a classic) has now been blended with a bright apple pie filling with crumbles of spiced pastry with cinnamon swirls. Are you drooling yet?
Well, you should be, because believe it or not, cheese in ice cream is TASTY. It’s also the main flavor you get throughout this treat and it somehow just works. It also adds even more creaminess to the already creamy ice cream. You’ll also get bites of cinnamon roll chunks, as well as apple pieces. But for us, this is ALL about the cheese. These flavors, though, are great together. Cheese is commonly served with apple pie, which was likely the inspiration for this flavor!
Is it a little different? Well, yes — it’s not every day someone puts cheese in ice cream. Will you regret not trying it if you’ve been given the chance? The answer is also “yes,” if you love cheese. However, we will say that if you’re looking for more cinnamon and apple flavors, they’re pretty subtle in this particular treat.
This flavor is part of this month’s Harvest Festival Series, which also features Pumpkin Spiced Tiramisu (yes, Salt & Straw finally went basic and we’re here for it). This flavor starts with spiced coffee ice cream, sweetened with maple syrup, cinnamon, clove, and ginger with a tiramisu cake swirl, drizzled in coffee mascarpone, and topped with chocolate stracciatella.
You can also get Caramel Apple Sherbet, which is made with lightly burnt vanilla-infused caramel ribbons mixed into an apple juice sherbet.
The Pinot Poached Pear Sherbet is made with fresh pears bathed in Willamette Vallet Pinot Noir blended into double-fold vanilla ice cream.
This month’s vegan flavor is Chocolate, Plum, and Hazelnut Shortbread. This ice cream has plum marmalade, dark chocolate chips, and crumbles of shortbread swirled into coconut cream.
These flavors will be available throughout September, so be sure to head to Salt & Straw to try them out! They’re available in both the Disney World and Disneyland locations.
