Will We Actually See a SKYLINER and NEW RIDES at Disneyland Resort?

If you’ve been following Disneyland Resort news for the past few years, then you may have heard about the proposed expansion to the parks.

Sleeping Beauty Castle

Unlike Disney World, the Disneyland Resort parks are landlocked in the middle of a city, with not a lot of room for growth and expansion due to surrounding businesses and hotels. However, in 2021, Disney proposed a project called DisneylandForward, which would allow the resort to fill in some unused space on the property to add more attractions and offerings to the theme parks. Progress on getting this plan approved has been slow, but now we have an update.

As part of the process for approval, DisneylandForward had to go through an environmental impact study, and that report was recently released. The full report is about 17,000 pages, but you can check out snippets of it online in smaller chunks (we’re still talking a couple hundred pages, you guys!).

The report contains quite a few interesting snippets of information for those interested in the possible expansion. To start, it lists the project goals for DisneylandForward, which include, “enhance the Disneyland Resort Specific Plan area by providing a wider range of attractions, hotel accommodations, restaurants, shopping opportunities, and public parking.”

The Specific Plan that is outlined in the environmental impact study includes four planning districts — a Theme Park District, a Parking District, a Southeast District, and District A. It also includes two overlays, a C-R Overlay and an Anaheim GardenWalk Overlay.

If the project gets approved, new additions will be constructed in the areas of the resort that Disney considers “underdeveloped.” This would include space surrounding some of the Disneyland Resort hotels west of the parks and a parking lot on the east side.

In order for guests to access this space easily, new walkways or methods of transportation may need to be built. The study says the following: “In order to facilitate development of new attractions west of Disneyland Drive, up to two additional pedestrian bridges or crossings may be constructed over Disneyland Drive and will serve as a continuation of the themed environment across the roadway, similar to the existing Downtown Disney crossing, with no access to and from the public right-of-way”

The study notes that the new crossings could be built in the form of a pedestrian bridge/walkway or in the form of a ride crossing. The study includes example photos of Disney World’s PeopleMover and Disney Skyliner as possible options for a “ride crossing.”

Disneyland Resort wouldn’t be adding any additional acreage to the property, just rezoning the land they already own. According to the DisneylandForward website, current possibilities for IP that could be included in the updates include additions like Frozen, Peter Pan, Tangled, Zootopia, TRON, and Toy Story Land.

According to the Orange County Register, Disneyland hopes to have the DisneylandForward project go before the Anaheim City Council for approval before the end of 2024.

We’re interested to see what comes next with this proposal and what other attractions or additions Disneyland Resort might consider for the future. Stay tuned to DFB for the updates.
