The classic 1990s animated series “Gargoyles” is being turned into a live-action series for Disney+, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Live-Action “Gargoyles”
Gary Dauberman is teaming up with James Wan’s Atomic Monster to create the series. Dauberman will write, executive produce, and showrun the series with Atomic Monster. The show is in “early development” at Disney Branded Television.
Dauberman wrote “Annabelle,” “Annabelle: Creation,” “The Nun,” and “Annabelle Comes Home,” the latter of which he also directed. They are all part of The Conjuring Universe, produced by Atomic Monster. He also co-wrote “It” (2017) and wrote “It Chapter Two” (2019).
Dauberman and Atomic Monster also created DC’s “Swamp Thing” series. Atomic Monster produced the recent hit “M3GAN.”
“Gargoyles”
One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was the age of gargoyles. Stone by day, warriors by night, We were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect, frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and we live again! We are defenders of the night! We are gargoyles!
The original animated “Gargoyles” aired from 1994 to 1997. It was created by Greg Weisman, who claimed in 2020 that coverage of the O.J. Simpson trial contributed to the show’s cancelation.
The cast of the original series included Keith David as Goliath, Ed Asner as Hudson, Thom Adcox-Hernandez as Lexington, Jeff Bennett as Brooklyn, Bill Fagerbakke as Broadway, Frank Welker as Bronx, Brigitte Bako as Angela, Salli Richardson as Elisa Maza, Jonathan Frakes as David Xanatos, and Marina Sirtis as Demona.
The story of “Gargoyles” has continued in comic books. It’s not clear if the live-action show will be an adaptation, continuation, or spinoff of the original series.
“Gargoyles” is available to watch in full on Disney+.
