More new Pirates of the Caribbean merchandise featuring Mickey & Friends has docked at Walt Disney World. We previously found a new ear headband, pin sets, a bandanna, a slap bracelet, a cup, and various toys. New this week are a pleather purse and socks, both available in Plaza del Sol Caribe Bazaar at Magic Kingdom.
Pirates Purse – $34.99
The purse has a front pocket resembling a treasure chest or pirate bag with a buckle.
The top half of the purse is black with patches of Mickey and Minnie dressed as pirates. Minnie stands next to a jolly roger flag, while Mickey brandishes a scimitar.
The bottom half of the purse is sparkling gold.
It has a yellow handle on top and rings to attach the included strap, turning the bag into either a crossbody or backpack.
The pocket zips up.
The interior lining is a light tan color with an all-over pattern of pirate treasure, the Pirates of the Caribbean logo, and “Yo ho! A Pirate’s life for me.”
Pirates Socks – $12.99
The socks are blue on one side and feature Mickey and Donald, both with swords in hand.
The toes are black.
The other side is red and patterned with white skulls.
Pirates of the Caribbean
Walt Disney originally conceived of the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction as a walkthrough wax museum. The idea evolved to become a boat ride and it opened in Disneyland in March 1967, just a few months after Walt’s death.
The original attraction has 630,000 gallons of water, 53 animal audio-animatronics, and 75 human audio-animatronics. Blue Bayou Restaurant overlooks the beginning of the ride.
Pirates of the Caribbean wasn’t an opening-day attraction at Magic Kingdom because the Walt Disney World Resort was so close to the real Caribbean that the company thought it wouldn’t be of interest to Floridian guests. They were proven wrong, however, and opened the second Pirates of the Caribbean in Magic Kingdom in 1973.
Versions of the ride have gone on to open in Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Shanghai Disneyland.
The ride also spawned the hugely successful “Pirates of the Caribbean” film franchise, which began in 2003 with “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” There have been five films so far, with more planned.
Disney just announced that Peg-Leg Pete, a.k.a. the Barker Bird, would be returning to Magic Kingdom after a long absence, this time at a new Pirates of the Caribbean tavern.
