This Menu Item Has DISPPEARED from Cinderella’s Royal Table in Magic Kingdom — But You Can Make It at Home!

September 15th to October 15th was Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month, and the Disney Parks marked the celebration in a myriad of ways. From special character sightings to new performances in the parks to brand-new food items, the celebration was certainly a big deal at Disney!

Well, to add to the celebration, Disney announced that Cinderella’s Royal Table was featuring a new menu item: Creamy Plantain Soup. Even though the soup is gone from this restaurant now, you can make this tasty dish at home!

Inspired by Disney World assistant sous chef Suni Quinones Rivera’s Puerto Rican culture and treasured family recipe (her grandmother made her a similar dish when she was sick as a child), this menu item was available at Cinderella’s Royal Table through October 15th — but Disney recently released the recipe online, so here’s how you can make it at home!

First things first, here’s what you’ll need:

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 1/2 cup diced carrot
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 5 green plantains, peeled and cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable soup base
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 bunch cilantro, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt, plus more, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more, to taste
  • 6 fried plantain strips
  • 1/4 cups micro cilantro

Here’s how to make it:

  1. Heat oil in a large stockpot over medium heat for 5 minutes, until hot. Add onion and carrot and sauté for five minutes, until soft. Add garlic and sauté for one minute, until fragrant.
  2. Add plantains, vegetable soup base, and water. Bring it to a boil. Reduce heat to summer and cook for 20 minutes, until plantains are soft. Remove from heat.
  3. Add cumin, cilantro, salt, and pepper. Pureé with an immersion blender until smooth. Season with additional salt and pepper, to taste.
  4. Ladle soup into bowls and garnish each bowl with one plantain strip and a few sprigs of micro cilantro.
