Illumination is reportedly preparing to pitch a Nintendo cinematic universe that would culminate in a Super Smash Bros. movie, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the “Avengers” films.
Super Smash Bros. Movie
The news comes from leaker Daniel Richtman (@DanielRPK on X) and follows the success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” earlier this year.
ComicBook.com points out that there could be some rights issues with a Super Smash Bros. movie as many of the game’s playable characters are not owned or only co-owned by Nintendo. The live-action “The Legend of Zelda” film in development could also mean the characters from that franchise wouldn’t appear in animated films.
Some Super Smash Bros. games also feature Sonic the Hedgehog, who is owned by Sega and has his own successful series of films. ComicBook.com asked “Sonic the Hedgehog” film director Jeff Fowler in an interview last year about a potential crossover. He seemed unsure if it could happen, but he did say, “Getting Mario and Sonic in the ring, I mean everyone would be kinda dying for that, right? That’s just classic.”
The original Super Smash Bros., a.k.a. Super Smash Bros. 64, was released in 1999. It was followed by Super Smash Bros. Melee (2001), Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008), Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U (2014), and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018). The first game had 12 playable characters, while Ultimate and its DLC had 89.
