Friday, December 15, 2023, is the 50th anniversary of the opening of Pirates of the Caribbean in Magic Kingdom. The original Disneyland attraction opened on March 18, 1967. Disney initially thought Walt Disney World guests wouldn’t be interested in a Caribbean-based attraction because of their proximity to the real location. But Disney was proven wrong and they opened Pirates of the Caribbean at Magic Kingdom on December 15, 1973, two years after the park first opened. New limited edition and limited release pins honor 50 years of the Magic Kingdom version of Pirates of the Caribbean.
Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Pirates of the Caribbean Pin – $29.99
The silver pin features a pirate ship appearing to emerge from a smoky background full of treasure, swords, maps, bottles, and more pirate imagery. The ride’s talking skull with crossed swords is at the top of the pin, while a 50 and “Pirates of the Caribbean” are at the bottom.
The pin has a limited edition size of 1,500 and comes in packaging that matches recent cutesy Pirates of the Caribbean merchandise, although the pin itself is not in that style. We picked up this pin in Plaza del Sol Caribe Bazaar, the gift shop next to Pirates of the Caribbean in Magic Kingdom.
Limited Release 50th Anniversary Pirates of the Caribbean Pin – $17.99
This pin features the talking skull and crossed swords in full color, with a black hat and red bandanna. The red sails of a ship are behind it and “Pirates of the Caribbean” is on a blue background above. A ship’s wheel at the bottom has the number 50.
Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Pirates of the Caribbean Pin – $19.99
The last pin sees a skeletal pirate in the crow’s nest of a ship with a black “Pirates of the Caribbean” sail. This is inspired by the large sail sign outside the attraction. The number 50 is on a set of crossed bones at the bottom of the pin.
