The security scanners tested at Tokyo DisneySea earlier this year are becoming a more permanent feature of the resort and have been installed at the park’s north gate (near Hotel MiraCosta) as well as at Tokyo Disneyland.

New Tokyo Disney Resort Security Scanners

In 2020, Tokyo Disney Resort implemented increased security measures ahead of the Summer Olympics, installing metal detectors and X-ray scanners. This system remained in place until it began to be replaced by these new scanners.

These contactless scanners work similarly to the security scanners now in use at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort. Guests walk through two shoulder-height poles (which were covered in tarps when we noticed them at the north gate). If the scanner detects something potentially dangerous, like a weapon, the security Cast Member will be alerted and have the guest step to the side for further checks.

The system is “contactless” because Cast Members don’t need to handle most guest belongings.

The X-ray scanners are still at the Tokyo DisneySea north entrance but covered by tarps.

Signs inform guests to put items from their pockets into their bags.

The scanners are now in use at both parks.

A small screen on the right-hand pole lets guests know when to wait and when to walk. Guests walk through one at a time.

The metal detectors are also still in use as an extra precaution.

Urayasu City recently received a bomb threat for Tokyo Disney Resort and surrounding facilities. Nothing came of the threat but there was increased security in the area during investigations.
