Review
Gameplay begins with choosing from eight Disney characters — Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey, Gaston, Aladdin, Demona, Sulley, Dr. Facilier, Maleficent, and Ariel. Each one has their own specific set of moments, actions, and skills.
While we really liked the look of the acrylic characters used on the board, we did find that we had to add some temporary adhesive to the bottom of a few of them because, as we’d pick up a character, they would fall out of their base.
The game can be played in four different chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 are for beginners, and 3 and 4 are more difficult. The game comes with reference cards made for each one of the chapters, which we liked. They help to streamline gameplay and minimize the amount of items you need on the table while playing.
The physical design of the Sorcerer’s Arena, from the game arena, to the turn order tokens, to the status effects, was a massive success for us.
The colors, the artwork, and the creativity all deserve high praise. The pieces are brilliantly designed so that they fit together seamlessly.
This isn’t the sort of game where you have to fuss a lot with different pieces or get confused with the function of each piece.
The turn cards were also very well done, telling you exactly what you need to do on your turn.
Now, onto the gameplay. We must admit, upon looking at everything set up in front of us, we think it might be a little intimidating or overwhelming for new players with the amount of rule intricacies.
With any card game, there are a lot of mechanics that are specifically listed on the cards that then have to be referred to in an overall rulebook to determine what the card is saying — Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances is no exception.
However, once you start to understand these mechanics after a play-through or two, you can get a good baseline on how to play the game as new mechanics begin to show up with different characters. For us, this is where gameplay got exciting, as we were able to understand how these mechanics play together, and were able to work toward those goals with our characters.
Overall, we’d say this game is well-suited for intermediate-level players, though it can certainly fall into the advanced category if you play the more difficult chapters.
The real highlight of Sorcerer’s Arena for us was the replayability factor. One thing we can’t emphasize enough is the importance of strategy when playing the game. You can choose to play with as much or as little strategy as you want, but that will greatly impact your outcome. There are so many different ways things can go depending on the characters you choose to pair together. Each one of your decisions alters the game, and for that reason, we definitely look forward to playing again.

In addition to the base game, there are also four expansions to add even more characters to your game: At the Ready, Turning the Tide, Thrills & Chills, and Leading the Charge. These expansions included characters like Mulan, Elsa, Buzz Lightyear, Jack Skellington, and more, all of whom add new special abilities and combinations to change up gameplay.
We think Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances makes a great gift for the Disney and tabletop fan in your life, and highly recommend giving it a try.
