As Disney continues to test its one-app experience with Disney+ and Hulu, a new report from Deadline shares that Disney also plans to integrate programming on Star+ service in Latin America into Disney+, eventually shuttering the former.
Star+ Content to Shift to Disney+ in Latin America
Disney will begin to move their programming from Star+ over to Disney+ in the second quarter of 2024. Star+ will also wind down as a stand-alone streaming service in Latin America.
A source shared with Deadline that this change “was timed to the likely launch of the Disney+ ad-supported tier in the region next year.” However, a Disney representative told Deadline that “launch plans in additional territories have not yet been finalized.”
Disney+ launched its ad-supported subscription tier in the U.S. in 2022, followed by a global launch on November 1, 2023.
Disney acquired the Star networks and Hotstar streaming service as part of its $71.3 billion purchase of most of 21st Century Fox, which was finalized in 2019. As Disney+ grew, the company offered it as an add-on to Hotstar and launched Star+ as its own service in Latin America in 2021. Outside the U.S., Star is visible as a tile in the Disney+ app, similar to the Hulu integration in the States.
Further details will be announced at a later date, including pricing for the integrated offering in Latin America. You can learn more about Star+ on its official website.
