Gonzo, Blade, Mario — The Game Awards “spared no expense” this year when it came to guests, announcements, and winners. The awards ceremony was live on Thursday, December 7, 2023, and several Disney and Universal-related games were represented.
The Game Awards 2023
“Super Mario Bros. Wonder” won Best Family Game. It was up against “Disney Illusion Island,” “Sonic Superstars,” “Party Animals,” and Nintendo’s “Pikmin 4.” The latter game did win Best Sim / Strategy.
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was nominated for Best Adaptation, but lost out to HBO’s hugely popular “The Last of Us” series. The original “The Last of Us” game inspired Halloween Horror Nights houses at both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Florida this year.
“The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” took home Best Action / Adventure Game, beating out “Alan Wake 2,” “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” “Resident Evil 4,” and “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.” Nintendo recently announced they’re developing a live-action “The Legend of Zelda” film.
“Alan Wake 2” and “Baldur’s Gate 3” dominated The Game Awards. “Alan Wake 2” won Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best Narrative, while “Baldur’s Gate 3” won Game of the Year, Best Community Support, Best Multiplayer, and Best Performance (to actor Neil Newbon).
But The Game Awards isn’t just about the winners. Several new games were announced, including exciting titles for fans of Marvel and “Jurassic Park.”
‘Marvel’s Blade’
Marvel Games and Bethesda Softworks announced “Marvel’s Blade,” a single-player, third-person game based on the comic book hero who will also soon get his own MCU film.
In “Marvel’s Blade,” Eric Brooks is the legendary Daywalker, half-man, half-vampire torn between the warm society of the living and the rushing power of the undead. From Bethesda and Arkane Lyon, the studio that brought you “Dishonored” and “Deathloop,” “Marvel’s Blade” is a mature, single-player, third-person game set in the heart of Paris, now in development in collaboration with Marvel Games.

‘Jurassic Park: Survival’
“Jurassic Park: Survival” follows a scientist left behind on Isla Nublar after the events of the first “Jurassic Park” film. It will be a single-player action-adventure game for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Return to Isla Nublar the day after the events of the beloved 1993 Jurassic Park film in an original adventure 65 million years in the making.
Survive thrilling first-person action as InGen scientist Dr. Maya Joshi, who was unable to evacuate Isla Nublar, in this single-player action-adventure game and discover a never-before-told story.
Through thrilling encounters, experience the wonder and danger of dinosaurs, each with their own distinct and adaptive behaviors brought to life by John Hammond’s vision.
Gonzo and Camilla
The star of The Game Awards (at least to us) was Gonzo the Great! The Muppet appeared alongside host Geoff Keighley to talk about his favorite games of the year. He was also joined by his love, Camilla the Chicken.
