Ana Ofelia Murguía, the Mexican actor who provided the voice for the titular character in Pixar’s 2017 film, “Coco,” passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2023, as reported by Variety.
Voice of Mama Coco Passes Away
In the film, a young boy named Miguel crosses over to the land of the dead during Mexico’s Día de los Muertos. The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Remember Me.” Murguía provided the voice for Mama Coco, Miguel’s grandmother; the moment in which Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) sings “Remember Me” to Coco is the emotional crux of the film.
Murguía was born in Mexico in 1933, and won the Golden Ariel special lifetime achievement award in 2011; the award was jointly given to writer-director Jorge Fons. During her career, Murguía won Best Supporting Actress at the Ariel awards — Mexico’s Oscars equivalent — in 1979, 1986, and 1996.
With over 100 acting credits, her final acting role was in a 2018 episode of “José José: El Príncipe de la Canción,” a fictionalized retelling of the Mexican singer’s life story.
Our thoughts are with Murguía’s family and loved ones.
