Disney Legend Glynis Johns passed away on Thursday at the age of 100, ABC 7 Eyewitness News reports. According to Johns’ publicist Mitch Clem, she passed from natural causes.
Johns portrayed Winifred Banks, suffragette and mother of Jane and Michael, in “Mary Poppins.” Before “Mary Poppins,” her Disney credits were Mary Tudor in “The Sword and the Rose” and Helen Mary MacGregor in “Rob Roy, the Highland Rogue.”
Johns was born to Welsh parents in South Africa on October 5, 1923. She received a degree to teach dance by the age of 10 and by 12 had won 25 gold medals for dance in England. She appeared in her first film, “South Riding,” at age 13. At age 19, she was the youngest actress to play the read role in a theatrical production of “Peter Pan.” (via D23)
Johns also appeared in various television shows, including her own series, “Glynis.”
In 1961, she was nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress as Mrs. Firth in “The Sundowers.” In 1965, she earned the Laurel Award for Female Supporting Performance for “Mary Poppins.” She won the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical for her performance as Desiree Armfeldt in “A Little Night Music.”
One of her final roles was in the Touchstone Pictures film “The Ref” in 1994. She was inducted as a Disney Legend in 1998 and retired from acting the next year. She was the first and so far only Disney Legend to become a centenarian.
