First Look at Disney+ on Apple Vision Pro Launching in February With Movie-Inspired Environments and 3D Experiences

Disney+ will be available on Apple Vision Pro when the mixed reality headset launches on February 2, 2024. Disney and Apple first announced the collaboration last summer. Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream the site’s entire catalog and Disney Bundle subscribers will be able to access Hulu content. Through Apple Vision Pro, users will be able to turn their virtual space into a Disney-inspired environment.

Disney+ on Apple Vision Pro environments

A preview video included in the press release about Disney+ on Apple Vision Pro included a look at some of these environments. The Disney+ Theater is inspired by the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, where several Disney films, including most recently “Wish,” have premiered. Users can virtually visit the Scare Floor from Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc.” Our screenshot above gives a glimpse at the Avengers Tower environment, putting users on top of the tower in Manhatten. The fourth previewed environment is Tatooine, seen from the cockpit of Luke Skywalker’s landspeeder. The environments include animations, sounds, and Easter eggs.

The environments were developed using the Universal Scene Description (USD) format originally developed by Pixar and open-sourced in 2016. Disney wrote, “USD allows developers to work simultaneously and collaboratively across creation tools and development pipelines to compose complex 3D experiences, at scale, across many applications, and in real time.”

Disney+ on Apple Vision Pro 3D movies

Users can watch 3D movies “with remarkable depth and clarity” using Dolby Vision and Multiview High Efficiency Coding (MV-HEVC) on Apple Vision Pro. These 3D movies will be among those available at launch: “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Elemental,” and “Encanto.” More titles will be announced at a later date.

Apple Vision Pro users are also able to rent or purchase most 3D movies through the Store tab in the Apple TV app. Users who previously purchased 3D Disney movies will be able to access them on Apple Vision Pro at no additional cost.

“At Disney, we’re constantly searching for new ways to entertain, inform, and inspire by combining exceptional creativity with groundbreaking technology to create truly remarkable experiences,” Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, said in the press release. “Apple Vision Pro is a revolutionary platform that will bring our fans closer to the characters and stories they love while immersing them more deeply in all that Disney has to offer. We’re proud to once again be partnering with Apple to bring extraordinary new Disney experiences to people around the world.”
