The popular Frozen Ever After boat ride at Epcot’s Norway Pavilion will be closing for one day of routine maintenance on January 24, 2024 before reopening the next day on January 25, 2024.
Frozen Ever After first opened in June 2016, replacing the former Maelstrom boat ride that had been operating since 1988. The new attraction brought guests into the wintry world of Arendelle from Disney’s hit 2013 animated film Frozen. Riders board ancient Nordic boats and sail through scenes featuring favorite characters like Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven as they sing classic songs from the movie.
The ride utilizes advanced Audio-Animatronic technology to bring the Frozen characters to life, featuring Disney’s first all-electric animated figures. This allows for incredibly fluid, realistic movement that immerses guests into the experience. Other highlights include traveling both backward and forward down gentle drops, a brief encounter with the lovable snow monster Marshmallow, and an appearance by Elsa in her ice palace on the North Mountain.
The January 2024 refurbishment will only require a single day of downtime for routine upkeep and maintenance checks. No major changes or enhancements to the ride itself are expected during this brief closure. The timing aligns with Walt Disney World’s slower winter season, when there are fewer guests in the parks. While the ride mechanics should remain untouched, Disney uses refurbishment periods to implement any necessary repairs and ensure Frozen Ever After remains in top operating condition for years to come. This helps avoid unexpected prolonged shutdowns in the future that could greatly inconvenience guests planning vacations around the popular attraction.
The Norway Pavilion itself will remain open as usual during the single-day Frozen Ever After closure. Guests can still dine at the Akershus Royal Banquet Hall character dining restaurant, browse the pavilion’s shops, and explore the surrounding World Showcase area. Frozen Ever After consistently draws long standby wait times, upwards of 60 minutes or more on average. Disney utilizes Lightning Lane and Extended Evening Theme Park Hours to help manage high demand. The ride also offers disability access for those unable to wait in the regular line. Disney has not announced any operational impacts beyond January 24. Barring any unforeseen issues, Frozen fans can expect to once again “let it go” when riding their favorite flume attraction after a brief one-day pit stop.
