NEWS: A Proposal for Brightline Train Service to Tampa Could Soon Move Forward

We won’t lie — when we took the high-speed Brightline train from Orlando International Airport to Miami, it was a game-changer for us.

Imagine being able to get to some MAJOR cities in Florida without the hassle of driving OR flying. That means no traffic AND no hassle at the airport. Brightline is certainly trying to make that a reality, and it seems its next step could be a new route to Tampa. A new bill has just been introduced suggesting a Brightline route to Tampa.

According to Fox35, a proposal has been filed by Florida Senate Transportation Chair Nick DiCeglie, requiring the Florida Department of Transportation to save a 44-foot-wide rail corridor along the I-4 corridor. This land would be used for a Brightline train from Orlando to Tampa.

Under the proposal, the department would also have to consider infrastructure, including how bridge columns are spaced, as well as barriers that would separate the land set aside for the railway from the interstate. But it does seem like Florida is taking the next step forward in expanding Brightline’s service in the state.

Miami Brightline Station

Since the Miami to Orlando route opened, Brightline has continued to add more service between the two cities throughout the day. Brightline also recently announced plans to take its service to the West Coast with plans to connect Los Angeles to Las Vegas with high-speed rail.

Although plans for a train station in Disney Springs on the Miami to Orlando route were scrapped, an alternative station NEAR Disney Springs is still being considered. A public input session was recently held with communities who might be affected by this new station and route, meaning that it could still move forward. Overall, most of the public feedback was positive.

Onboard a Brightline train

If you do plan on taking the Brightline train to Orlando International Airport and are traveling to Disney World, you will still need to make arrangements to get to the Disney World Resort from the airport. There are numerous options, though, including rideshare services and the shared shuttle service Mears Connect Driven By Sunshine.

We’ll continue to keep an eye out for more Brightline news, so stay tuned to DFB for more.
