PHOTOS: Scrim & Scaffolding Up Around Soarin’ Restrooms and Humphrey’s Shop at Disney California Adventure

A new refurbishment project has begun in Grizzly Peak at Disney California Adventure. Construction walls, scaffolding, and scrim are now up around Humphrey’s Service & Supplies and the nearby restrooms.

Grizzly Peak Construction around Humphrey’s Service & Supplies

Construction walls and scrim around Humphrey's Service & Supplies.

Humphrey’s Service & Supplies and the restrooms are next to each other across from Soarin’ Around the World. The gift shop and restrooms remain open during construction work. The construction walls resemble a wooden fence.

A closer look at the scrim and scaffolding.

The scaffolding and tan scrim completely cover the aircraft hangar-like facade of Humphrey’s. The two retro gas pump props are right in front of the construction walls, with a lamppost between them.

Scrim and scaffolding cover the store, which is still open.

Signs next to the gift shop declare that it is open. Guests can walk through a tunnel between the construction walls and under a scaffolding platform to reach the store.

Guests walk past Humphrey's as scaffolding and scrim tower overhead.

The windsock on top of the facade is still visible poking up over the scaffolding.

Humphrey’s Service & Supplies is named after Humphrey the Bear, a classic Disney character that first appeared in the 1950 animated short film “Hold That Pose.” Humphrey appeared in a handful of other cartoons, usually as a rival to Donald Duck. Since the 1950s, he has only made a few cameo appearances in Disney films.

Scrim and scaffolding run over the entrance to restrooms.

There are also signs next to the restrooms declaring that they are open.

The facade likely won’t see major changes. It will probably be repainted and get minor maintenance. The facade of Soarin’ Around the World was similarly refurbished last summer.

The end of the scaffolding and scrim in this area.

The walls and scaffolding continue down to the end of the building, wrapping around the corner.

Grizzly Peak also includes the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, Grizzly River Run, and Smokejumpers Grill. The land was originally called Grizzly Peak Recreation Area as a part of the larger Golden State land with Pacific Wharf and Condor Flats. After the Golden State name was retired, Condor Flats was ultimately absorbed into Grizzly Peak with the 2015 Grizzly Peak Airfield update.

The One Thing That’ll SHOCK You About the New Cabins at Disney World’s Fort Wilderness Resort

Close your eyes for a moment. Picture a cabin in the woods. What does it look like? Are you picturing a simple, cozy house made of pine? Are you imagining a wood fireplace and a thermos full of hot tea? When we hear “cabin,” our mind goes to a log house in the woods. It’s nature!

Is this what you were imagining?

Perhaps the Cabins at Fort Wilderness is Disney’s answer to an idyllic life in the woods. There’s something about a cozy log cabin that screams “comfort,” right? These cabins have been pretty popular among Disney fans. They give you plenty of space, come with a full kitchen, and make you forget you’re living in the middle of a major Florida city. That’s magic! But recently, Disney did something that SHOCKED a lot of people. Remember those classic cabins we conjured up in our minds? They’re about to change.

Back in 2023, Disney announced that the Cabins at Fort Wilderness would be getting a makeover. Imagineers are redesigning these spaces to become the Disney Vacation Club Cabins at Fort Wilderness Resort (but keep in mind you don’t have to be a Disney Vacation Club member to book a stay in a new cabin). Here’s a peek at the NEW design. Talk about a MAJOR transformation!

©Disney

Gone are the old log cabins, and in their place will be over 350 refreshed cabins. Disney’s concept art features sleek, modern cabins, which Disney explained are “inspired by the resort’s idyllic setting, while also paying homage to the resort’s unique culture and heritage through the magic of Disney storytelling.

©Disney

Just like before, the cabins will sleep up to six adults and feature a bedroom, bathroom, living room, full kitchen, and private patio. Some cabins will also be dog-friendly. Below, you can see what the living room area will look like — we spy a murphy bed!

©Disney

The updated floor plan shows a single bedroom off to the left and a bathroom off to the right. In the center, guests have a kitchen, dining area, and sofa that folds down into a bed. If you’ve ever heard of a “shipping container home,” these designs feel very similar to those homes. (Google it — you’ll see what we mean.)

©Disney

OK, now let’s talk about the changes. We’ve heard from a LOT of Disney fans, and the overwhelming sentiment seems to be that fans miss the cozy cabin vibes of the old homes. Let’s be honest — can we even call these new things “cabins”? If anything, it looks like a tiny house! And we’re not saying there’s anything wrong with a tiny house — any kind of HOUSE is an upgrade from those tiny Disney World hotel rooms we’re used to. But by definition, the “cabin” part of the Fort Wilderness Cabins seems to have disappeared.

©Disney

Let’s take another look at the old cabins. Some may argue that these rooms were dated. On the other hand, other Disney fans liked the nostalgic, woodsy appearance of these cabins. Either way, many seemed pretty shocked by the new designs.

Fort Wilderness cabin

So, what are your thoughts? Are you team redesign, or do you miss the log cabin-style homes? These new cabins are set to open on July 1st, 2024. That’s SOON! We can’t wait to check out the new cabins for ourselves. Will we miss the old rooms? Yes. But are we ready for something NEW? Yes!

We’ll be sure to keep our eyes out for additional updates, so stay tuned for more Disney news!

REVIEW: We Tried a Mickey-shaped Churro Cream Puff and We’ll NEVER Look at Pastries the Same Way Again

Okay, it is NO secret that when it comes to iconic — and delicious — Disney snacks, Disneyland churros are hard to beat.

Rancho del Zocalo in Disneyland

Not only do they come in a variety of flavors, but those churros also inspire other snacks, like the Churro Toffee (seriously, it’s the BEST). Well, the churro has now inspired a brand new snack. But does this new snack live up to its churro inspiration? Come with us as we find out!

Okay, so we’re headed over to Rancho del Zocalo in Disneyland to try the Mickey-shaped Churro Cream Puff. Okay, that’s like five words that seriously make us SO HAPPY. We’re OBSESSED with Mickey-shaped food, obviously. We’re also obsessed with churros. Plus, adding Cream Puffs? DISNEY, WE LOVE YOU!

Mickey-shaped Churro Cream Puff!!!

For $7.99, you get a Mickey-shaped churro cream puff filled with cinnamon pastry cream, topped with cinnamon Craquelin and cinnamon sugar. Cream puffs can go stale SO fast, but this treat is kept refrigerated, so it’s nice and soft when you get it. But does it taste like a churro?

Yep, it’s shaped like Mickey!

YES!!! It’s like a churro but a little fancier than one you can just carry in your hand on the go — no, you want to sit down and enjoy every bite of this baby. Inside the pastry is a liberal amount of cream, too, and it also has subtle hints of cinnamon — it’s sort of like a vanilla cinnamon custard. The flavor is mild so that it doesn’t overwhelm the pastry.

SO good

It’s also a good portion size, especially with all that cream. We thought it was very filling, especially for something under $8. Now, we will say the chocolate piece on top isn’t anything special — it’s more decorative than anything. But we dipped it in the cream, and YUM. By the way, Mickey’s ears also have cream in them! Disney knocked it out of the park with this treat.

LOTS of cream inside

So head on over to Rancho del Zocalo to try it for yourself and tell ’em that Disney Food Blog sent you. Maybe they’ll decide to keep it on the menu permanently (we can only hope!).

Stay tuned to DFB for more reviews!

ALERT: The Highest Wait Time Belongs to a NEW Ride in EPCOT!

Yes, you probably enjoy shopping and eating around Disney World, but let’s face it — most people are there for the rides!

EPCOT

We can’t blame you because Disney World is full of both classic and innovative attractions. While many think of Hollywood Studios or Magic Kingdom as the parks with the longest wait times, EPCOT has a couple of rides that pull big crowds of their own. Those two attractions are Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and Frozen Ever After, and one just BEAT the other for the highest wait time in the park!

Today we’re going to check out the average wait times from the past week in Disney World listed from highest to lowest by park. What are you waiting for? Let’s get into it.

EPCOT Wait Times

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure took the highest spot in EPCOT last week, but now Frozen Ever After is in the number one spot. Regardless, if you want to get on either of these rides, prepare to wait, rope drop them, or get a Lightning Lane through Genie+.

This FAA Inspection UPDATE Could Delay Your Next Flight to Disney World

When you travel to Disney World, do you fly?

Orlando Airport

Well, if you do, you’ve probably already experienced a delay here and there or maybe even a flight cancelation. These things do sometimes happen. Well, delays might be even MORE common, at least over the next few months.

Earlier this month, an Alaskan Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing after a chunk of the plane’s fuselage was blown out. That resulted in flights with that particular type of plane, a Boeing 737-9 MAX, to be grounded until all the planes could be properly inspected.

©Alaska Airlines

In response to the incident, flights on United Airlines were also canceled. The two airlines are the only domestic carriers utilizing those particular planes. Overall, hundreds of flights ended up being canceled. Well, now, it looks like more flights could be delayed or canceled.

©Getty Images

The FAA is now suggesting that flights on Boeing 737-900ER planes also be thoroughly inspected. Although these are different planes from the 737-9 MAX, they still have the same door plug design that proved faulty in the 737-9 MAX. The FAA Safety Alert for Operators states:

“The Boeing 737-900ER mid-exit door plugs have an identical door plug design to the 737-9 MAX. As part of their Safety Management Systems, some operators have conducted additional inspections on the 737-900ER mid-exit door plugs and have noted findings with bolts during the maintenance inspections.”

Expect more flight delays and cancellations

If these planes are to be inspected, this will affect even more airlines, including Delta Airlines, who, according to Reuters, currently has 160 of these particular planes in its fleet. Alaska Airlines has 79 in its fleet, while United has 136.

We’ll continue to keep an eye on the situation and keep you updated, so stay tuned to DFB for more.

PHOTOS: New Castle Projectors Added Along the Moat at Disneyland Park

Two new castle projectors have been added in Disneyland Park, encased in large structures designed to match Sleeping Beauty Castle.

New Castle Projectors Added to Disneyland Park

One of the new castle projectors in Disneyland Park, viewing from the bridge.

The new projectors are present at the edge of the castle moat on both the Frontierland and Tomorrowland sides of the castle.

Frontierland Side

The Frontierland-side castle projector.

As you can see with the comparison to a person, these structures are quite large. Encased in “brick” to match Sleeping Beauty Castle, they also have ventilation along the top to allow for the heat created by the projectors to escape.

Tomorrowland Side

The Tomorrowland-side castle projector.

A second projector is also present on the Tomorrowland side of the moat. The structures are exactly the same visually.

A close-up of the Owl sculpture on top of the projector structure.

Each new structure is topped with a “stone” sculpture of an owl from “Sleeping Beauty.”

We also noticed that two of the six banners on the walkway between the hub and the castle have been removed, specifically the two center banners. Temporary platforms are now in place where the poles previously stood, with two trashcans resting on top of each one.

One of the banners on the bridge to Sleeping Beauty Castle.

It is possible that the banners were removed for some sort of projection testing, or they could simply be getting replaced. The other four banners on the walkway are still in place.

Currently, guests can see Mickey’s Mix Magic nightly at 9:30 p.m. at Disneyland Park. The show includes projections on Main Street, U.S.A., the facade of “it’s a small world,” and, of course, Sleeping Beauty Castle. Performances held on Fridays through Sundays include fireworks.

3 CLUES Disney World Gave Us This Week

We’ve been in love with Disney World for basically our whole lives, okay?

Magic Kingdom

So, it’s safe to say that we’ve started to kind of pick up on hints that Disney drops. Clues they leave behind. Well, it’s more like Disney does things that can sometimes really get our hopes up, and then it’s all that we can focus on for the next week. Disney did that a few times THIS week, and we’re here to share those clues that we think Disney could be droppin’. 👀

Alright, sleuths. Who’s ready to look at some clues?

Clue #1 — Disney could SHORTEN the Food and Wine Festival.

Okay, y’all. We’re about to get into some evidence. EPCOT’s Food and Wine Festival used to start in August, and run until November. Then, it changed to starting in July, and still run until November. However, in previous years, they keep pushing back the start date again and again. The 2023 festival started 10 days later than the one in 2020.

Artist Palette of Wine and Cheese at the Food and Wine Festival

Oh, and Disney actually DID shorten the Flower and Garden Festival! All of this leads us to think that the Food and Wine Festival could be on its way to being a shorter, fall-only kind of deal.

Click here to see what else is happening at EPCOT

Clue #2 — We could see MORE menu changes at Disney’s BoardWalk.

We were strolling on the BoardWalk and decided to check out Trattoria al Forno, one of our favorite restaurants that still hasn’t brought back one of our FAVORITE character dining experiences, Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast. Here, you could meet Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, as well as Ariel and Prince Eric.

Trattoria al Forno

We were informed that there has been a CHANGE in the bar menu offerings at Trattoria al Forno. From reopening until now, the bar offerings were provided by Trattoria al Forno for AbracadaBAR, and now that has changed over to being serviced by Flying Fish Cafe (which neighbors the bar to the opposite side of Trattoria al Forno.) So, does this mean that more things will change for the Trattoria menu? WILL WE MAYBE SEE THE RETURN OF BON VOYAGE? Okay, that’s probably a stretch. But we could totally see more menu changes.

Click here to see what else is new at and around the Disney World hotels!

Clue #3 — We’re probably going to blow our diet in 2024.

We tried to set those New Year’s resolutions where we promised ourselves that we wouldn’t eat three desserts a day anymore. Well, we already have an inkling that these resolutions won’t really go over well. We found something super delicious this week and we just have to share it. It’s the TWIX Chocolate Caramel Bundt Cake for $5.99. It’s a mini chocolate bundt cake with caramel filling, topped with chocolate fudge frosting and chopped TWIX, and you can get it at the Main Street Confectionery in Magic Kingdom.

It’s literally delicious

It’s dense, but moist. Sweet without being overwhelming, with a rich chocolate flavor. The frosting is sweet, pairs well with the cake, and the TWIX crumbles enhance the cake rather than just clumping up and being super distracting — like some crushed caramel treats can do. We recommend this to anyone and everyone who loves chocolate or bundt cakes!

Of course, there were plenty of other exciting things that happened at Disney World this week. You can check it all out by scrolling through the links below!
