REVIEW: Disney Didn’t Have To Go THIS HARD on These NEW Desserts, but We’re Glad They Did

It’s a New Year, which means the holiday snacks are officially gone from Disneyland.

Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe

While we’re waiting to indulge in some Lunar New Year goodies, though, we’ve got some new Disney treats to tell you about. Well, there are three NEW treats and a hot returning item at Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe, one of our FAVORITE counter-service restaurants in Disneyland. PLUS, another new treat landed over at Disney California Adventure. So come with us as we eat ALL FIVE.

If you’ve ever visited Jolly Holiday, you’ve probably had that AMAZING Toasted Cheese sandwich there. Well, last year, that sandwich got an upgrade to become the Beef Birria Toasted Cheese Sandwich. During the holidays, the Beef Birria version of the sandwich fell off the menu, but now it’s back, and we’re diving into it again! We absolutely LOVED this sandwich last year, so we had big expectations.

Beef Birria Toasted Cheese

For $14.99, you get a Toasted Cheese Sandwich with Beef Birria, along with Pepper Jack, Onion, Cilantro, and Salsa Verde on Sourdough Bread, plus Consommé to dip it in. We’ll tell you now — this is still our #1 sandwich in Disneyland. The flavors and spices are ON POINT, with tender meat and the perfect amount of tang coming from the salsa verde. The Consommé is also flavorful, and when you dip the sandwich in it, it just all comes together perfectly.

FULL of flavors

Now, on to the new treats. If you love S’mores, we’ve got the treat for you. The S’mores Tart for $6.49 is made with Graham Cracker Shell filled with Dulce de Leche, Chocolate Sponge, and Chocolate Ganache, topped with a Toasted Marshmallow. We don’t know how Disney does it, but this little tart has a TON of rich flavor.

S’mores Tart

It’s served cold, so the cold ganache with the graham cracker crunch creates a nice texture. The Dulce de Leche is super creamy and also acts as a sort of glue to hold the whole thing together. The marshmallow on top is deliciously toasted. One bite of all those elements, and we were SOLD. It’s like a S’more but elevated. It IS rich, though, so it could be shareable.

Very rich!

Okay, on to the next treat. The Banoffee Pie for $7.49 is a Graham Cracker Shell filled with Dulce de Leche, Banana Diplomat Cream, and fresh Bananas, topped with Vanilla Bean Chantilly and Toffee Bits. Okay, where are our banana lovers? Because this is like an upgraded banana creme pie. It’s also served cold, but we found it light and airy.

Banoffee Pie

The graham cracker shell at the bottom of the pie is thin and soft, plus the Dulce de Leche pairs SO well with the banana flavor. It’s a very banana-forward dessert, so if you don’t like bananas, you won’t like this. We enjoyed the flavors and found that it wasn’t too overpowering. Our only wish is that we wanted more banana chunks.

LOADS of banana flavor

Jolly Holiday’s macarons are usually amazing, so we were excited to try the Cherry-Vanilla Macaron for $7.99. This Macaron has Cherry Buttercream and Vanilla Bean Crème sandwiched between White Macaron Shells, decorated with Gold Edible Glitter and Chocolate Flakes. Now note, these aren’t the usual small Macarons — this baby is BIG.

Cherry-Vanilla Macaron

Like a lot of Jolly Holiday’s macarons, the presentation on this is TOP NOTCH. They are PERFECT macarons — crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, plus it’s light and airy and melts in your mouth. The cherry drizzle on top adds a faint fruity taste. The vanilla bean creme is mild, but it pairs well with the cherry buttercream, where you get most of your flavor. Note that this thing is TART, so pucker up.

It’s a bit tart

Okay, one more to go! Whew! After all that, we made our way to Smokejumpers Grill in California Adventure to try the Raspberry Cheesecake Shake for $9.79. It’s a Raspberry Shake topped with Whipped Cream, Cheesecake Bites, and Fresh Raspberries. Well, this one wasn’t as MUCH a winner with us, although it was yummy.

Raspberry Cheesecake Shake

The raspberry shake part was delicious. We felt that cheesecake bites lacked flavor. All we got was something that tasted like plain old soggy cake. It might have made more sense to sprinkle them on top than have them at the bottom of the shake. By the time we got it, they were a mushy glob. We think Disney missed the mark on this one.

It was…okay

So there it is. FIVE treats, and we’re still here. We’ll be trying many other new snacks in Disneyland and Disney World, so stay tuned to DFB for more reviews.
