When it comes to coffee, your options on how you get it are seemingly endless.

If you’re like us and enjoy coffee on the go, you know that there are countless ways and places for you to order. Whether you’re going into a cafe to order, mobile ordering, or walking up to your favorite coffee kiosk — there are countless different ways for you to order your drink. Now, we can officially add another way to that list.

Starbucks had introduced a new way for you to order your coffee, and it could truly be a game changer.

Customers of Starbucks are now able to use their own personal cups for their coffee orders. This new option is available at all Starbucks locations in the U.S. and Canada. It isn’t only limited to people ordering in the cafe, either! You can use your personal cup even if you mobile order or place an order at the drive-thru window.

This announcement is the first of its kind when it comes to major coffee chains in the United States. The com pany says it fulfills a goal set by the company in 2022 to help reduce waste by 50% by 2030.

If you don’t have your personal cup or don’t want to use your own, no need to worry! You are still able to order like normal and receive your drink in the classic Starbucks cups.

The company is trying to get away from single-use plastic and shift towards things we can reuse — and as reusable Starbucks cup collectors, we’re excited to be able to utilize our collection in the drive-thru!

If you’re ordering your drink at the drive-thru window, let the barista know that you brought your own cup. Once you get to the window, the barista will take your cup without the lid and fill it with your beverage. Don’t forget to make sure it is CLEAN!

Mobile ordering is just as simple. When you’re creating your order, click the “Customization” button under the beverage you would like select “Personal Cup” in the menu, and then proceed with your order as you normally would. Once you go to pick up your order, hand the barista your clean cup without the lid and they will return it to you — filled with your drink of choice!

You’re not only limited to Starbucks cups — customers are allowed to bring any clean, personal cup they own. You can order any sort of beverage in any size to be put in your personal cup — so there is no need to worry when ordering!

When it comes to Starbucks locations in Target, grocery stores, and even Disney Parks, their participation may vary. Be sure to ask them the next time you make a Starbucks run to one of those locations!

Bringing your own cup with you to Starbucks also gets you some perks. Every customer who brings in their own, clean cup to use for their beverage will receive $0.10 off their beverage, and Starbucks Rewards members in the U.S. will also earn 25 bonus stars.

However, every new program comes with concerns — and the baristas at Starbucks are vocal about how they are feeling. In an article by Business Insider, their concerns were voiced.

Baristas are concerned that the use of personal cups will create chaos in the stores as people pick up their mobile orders and will slow them down in the drive-thru. Not only that, but they feel like they have not been given adequate training before the rollout of this policy. One barista said that the training was a 5-minute module that they did on an iPad, and left them with more questions than answers.

The biggest concern the baristas have is mobile ordering. They are fearful of people using the program to get the discount and bonus stars and then “forgetting” their reusable cups. Along with this, if you choose an in-store pickup for your beverage, you will have to stop a barista from their current task to get your drink filled. One barista even noted that if they get too many mobile orders at once for personal cups, they’ll have to make them in plastic cups first so that they can maintain efficiency — which defeats the purpose of using a personal cup in the first place.
