Artist Josh Agle, better known as Shag, has revealed that Disney canceled a mug he designed based on Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room due to concerns over cultural appropriation.
The mug depicted two Tiki Gods seen in the attraction, but Shag noted that Disney was “wary of cultural appropriation and being offensive to some people.” His original Instagram post can be seen below.
This isn’t the first time Disney has addressed concerns over cultural appropriation and sensitivity involving Polynesian-inspired attractions at the theme parks. The Jungle Cruise and the Trader Sam’s locations have seen changes to remove symbology and stereotypes.
Trader Sam got a new backstory on the Jungle Cruise that carried over to the bars. Merchandise was altered to remove tiki masks. And drinks at the bars were renamed, including the Shrunken Zombie Head.
