Auli’i Cravalho Returning for ‘Moana 2’

Auli’i Cravalho, the actress who voiced Moana in the 2016 film, is officially on board for the sequel, according to Deadline.

Voice of Moana Returning for Sequel

Deadline confirms that the actress is, “definitely” coming back to voice Moana for the sequel film. In a surprise announcement during the Q1 2024 earnings call in February, The Walt Disney Company CEO, Bob Iger, revealed that “Moana 2” was officially a go, explaining that the previously-announced “Moana” Disney+ series would be transitioned into a full-blown theatrical release. The film is set to hit theaters on November 27, 2024.

A screengrab of Auli'i Cravalho's Instagram bio.

In her Instagram bio, Cravalho currently lists “Moana 2,” further confirming the actress will return. Hawaiian-born, Cravalho auditioned for “Moana” as an unknown actress. The film was her first project.

Auli'i Cravalho, the voice of Moana, speaking in an interview.

In May of last year, Cravalho announced that she would not star as Moana in the live-action adaptation of the film, explaining that, as an executive producer on the film, she wanted the live-changing opportunity to go to someone who could accurately represent the character. Read her full comment below:

When I was cast as Moana at 14, it wonderfully changed my life and started my career. In this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital that casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell. So, as an executive producer on the film, I cannot wait to help find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit, and emotional strength. I am truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent, to honor our incredible Pacific peoples, cultures, and communities that helped inspired her story. And I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representation to come. Mahalo.

CONFIRMED: Disney’s NEW Haunted Mansion Lounge Will Honor a Former Imagineer

It’s been a little bit since we last heard of an update about the Disney Treasure ship, but this one’s quite exciting!

A Haunted Mansion lounge is coming soon!

It wasn’t too long ago that Haunted Mansion fans went bananas over the news that the beloved attraction would be making a first-of-its-kind appearance at sea with a themed parlor and we even got a sneak peek at some of the unique merchandise you’ll be able to purchase onboard the ship. Now, Disney is revealing another cool hidden detail that you’ll be able to spot (and impress your friends with your extensive Disney knowledge)!

The latest update for the ship gives us another detail about the highly anticipated Haunted Mansion Parlor.

A familiar-looking sculpture is looking to make its way to join the happy haunts that are set to board the Disney Treasure ship. Walt Disney Imagineering at Disney World is hard at work preparing this melting bust for transport to the ship. If at first glance you seem to think to yourself, “Hey, I’ve seen that one before!” you very well may have… just not quite like this.

©Disney

This mysterious bust is inspired by the Disney Legend Rolly Crump, who worked on the original Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland (and the news of this bust’s addition happens to have been released on his birthday)!

©Disney

“Rolly” was actually a nickname given to him by Walt Disney himself during his early days with The Walt Disney Company, and he was an integral voice and creator of the original Haunted Mansion attraction. Now, 60 years after the attraction’s debut, the Haunted Mansion Parlor will become the next chapter of the Haunted Mansion saga for Disney Cruise Line voyagers to experience at sea. The entire atmosphere of the parlor will have Rolly’s unique brand of charm, and little bits of eccentricity, and aims to be a “proud continuation of his legacy, celebrating the weird and the fantastical.”

Rolly Crump via ©LA Times

Part of Rolly’s earliest concepts for a “Museum of the Weird” inspired what we now know today as the Haunted Mansion. His original drawings and vision included a character affectionately known as the “Candle Man” who appeared to be melting like a candle. A small nod to this “Candle Man” can actually be spotted in Disney World’s Haunted Mansion ride in the attic scene (but you’ll have to look closely!).

Candle Man

It seemed fitting that the design for Rolly’s memorial bust would be inspired by his own creative genius, so the sculpture will appear dripping on the side of his face along with a memorial plaque that will read, “BROTHER ROLAND- FOREVER REVERED FOR EMBRACING THE WEIRD.” Be sure to look for Rolly’s bust as a cool easter egg to spot when you set sail on the Disney Treasure ship and enter the Haunted Mansion Parlor.

We think this is a very fitting nod to one of the original creative giants behind one of the most beloved attractions for Disney. Be sure to stay tuned with us at Disney Food Blog for even more cool Disney details!

We do have to break some bad news though, while this area is getting ready to open up, we spotted some more construction walls today blocking a pathway from World Nature to World Showcase. REVIEW: Chef Mickey’s Updated Breakfast Buffet Menu With Croissant Beignets, Andouille Sausage, and Plant-Based Hash

Since we had breakfast at Chef Mickey’s last summer, Disney’s Contemporary Resort restaurant has updated its menu with new and modified items. We returned to the character buffet to check out the changes.

Chef Mickey’s Breakfast Buffet Menu

Chef Mickey's Buffet Menus

The Chef Mickey’s breakfast buffet is $54 per adult and $34 per child (ages 3-9), plus tax and gratuity.

Plant-Based Hash

Plant-based hash and tofu scramble

Tofu scramble (right) is returning but a plant-based hash (left) has replaced the frittata. Ingredients for the hash were not listed but it appeared to include potatoes, kale, lettuce, and tomato. We may not be the audience for this dish, but it was weird. We didn’t like the hot lettuce and hot kale. We would have leaned more into potatoes. There’s nothing wrong with the individual ingredients, it’s that it’s like a hot salad.

Corned Beef Hash & Andouille, Peppers, and Onions

Chef Mickey's meats station

The carving station has been removed and the ham is now available in a tray. There is no longer beef brisket, but the corned beef hash remains. A completely new addition is andouille sausage with peppers and onions. Also available but not new are smoked bacon and pork sausage.

We tried the honey-glazed ham to see how it tastes now that it’s sitting in a tray instead of being freshly carved. We found it to be surprisingly good. It was tender, juicy, and moist.

corned beef hash

The corned beef hash (right) includes potatoes and peppers. It’s just fine. It wasn’t too salty, which is a problem we’ve had with Chef Mickey’s before.

andouille sausage with peppers and onions

The new andouille sausage with peppers and onions is great. It’s oily and greasy but everything is cooked well. It’s all the right temperature and consistency. The peppers offer a good kick of spice.

Beignets

Mickey waffles, croissant beignets, berry sauces

Croissant beignets are new to the menu; they are not labeled in person as being croissant-style, so might be a little confusing if you don’t know. Thankfully, they’re delicious. We think they’re now the best item at this buffet.

Croissant beignets

They’re soft, flaky, and buttery with the right amount of cinnamon sugar. The outside is crisp while the inside is doughy (without being too much so). It’s not overly sweet. There is strawberry sauce and blueberry sauce at this station, but we wouldn’t add anything to these, they’re perfect as-is.

Seasonal Pancakes

seasonal and celebration pancakes

In addition to the “celebration pancakes,” there are new “seasonal pancakes.” Even though we were visiting Chef Mickey’s well past the new year, the seasonal pancakes were pumpkin-flavored, which seemed more like a fall flavor than winter.

pumpkin pancakes

The flavor wasn’t bad. There was just a hint of pumpkin, kind of like pumpkin bread. But the pancakes were doughy and undercooked.

Bananas Foster French Toast

wdw contemporary chef mickeys 8856

There used to be French toast sticks and a bananas foster bread pudding dessert. Now, there’s bananas foster French toast — at least, according to the sign. The French toast and bananas in syrup are in separate dishes, so you don’t have to have them together if you don’t want.

French toast

The French toast is just right. It’s cooked well.

Banana slices in syrup

The sauce tastes like syrup and bananas — exactly what you would expect. This wasn’t as mind-blowing as the croissant beignets but it wasn’t bad.

Warm Sticky Cinnamon Rolls

cinnamon rolls trays

Over at the dessert station, cinnamon rolls have replaced the bread pudding. These are great. They remind us of Cinnabon or a similar cinnamon roll you would have gotten at a mall in the 1980s.

Cinnamon rolls in tray

They’re rich, dense, soft, and warm. The cinnamon sugar icing was still in a liquid state. One cinnamon roll and one croissant beignet could be a full meal.

Overall

Chef Mickey's sweet breakfast

Chef Mickey’s may not be the best character meal at Walt Disney World, but it’s a rite of passage that we always recommend doing at least once. You’re paying for the characters and setting, not the food.

Chef Mickey's savory breakfast

That said, these changes make the breakfast slightly better and, in general, the food quality has improved. We applaud Chef Mickey’s for trying something new.

Chef Minnie and Chef Goofy

Regarding the characters, you meet Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, and Pluto. They come to each table briefly and also do a small celebration together. When we last visited Chef Mickey’s, they danced to “Biscuits in the Oven,” which we didn’t love. Now the characters perform to the music of the extinct “Move It! Shake It!” dance party from Magic Kingdom. We miss “Celebrate with Mickey Mouse” from pre-2020, but the current dance is an improvement from “Biscuits in the Oven.”

For more of our thoughts on Chef Mickey’s breakfast items, check last year’s breakfast review.
