Disney Enterprises filed a patent revealing they may be hoping to bring technology from “The Mandalorian” to life.
Disney Patent for Drone Airframe
The patent for “Airframe of a volitant body” was originally filed in late 2020, about a year after “The Mandalorian” premiered, and was published last month. Here is the abstract:
Systems, methods, and apparatuses for an airframe of a volitant body are presented herein. An apparatus may include a body having a normal axis. The body comprising a central air passage communicating through the body along the normal axis of the body. The central air passage may have an inlet at a first end of the body and an outlet at a second end of the body, the second end being opposite the first end. The central air passage may form an interior surface of the body. The central air passage permitting a flow of air through the body via the central air passage. The inlet may be formed to produce a Venturi effect in the flow of air passing through the central air passage from the inlet to the outlet by choking the flow of air at the inlet.
In layman’s terms, the patent is for the frame of a drone. The potential drone is also referred to as a “flying toy device.”
The patent explains that “Drones are typically complex devices that use exposed spinning propellers and/or plastic rail guards in the same plane as the propellers to provide a minimal form of protection. Though they can maintain efficiency, the configurations of exposed propellers and/or using plastic rail guards may be unsafe. Upon collision of the drone with a user, the exposed spinning propellers may cause bodily harm.” The airframe seeks to solve the safety problem.
Connection to “The Mandalorian”
What does this have to do with “The Mandalorian”? Fans have noticed the similarity between the patent’s figures and Grogu’s hovering pram. Disney may be trying to bring Grogu in the floating device to life in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
Currently, Din Djarin and Grogu appear in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but Grogu is just peeking out of the Mandalorian’s bag. A floating pram may provide a better meet-and-greet opportunity with “Baby Yoda” or could be incorporated into an entertainment offering.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will soon join Star Tours. The characters will appear in their own film filming this summer.
