A handful of new “The Liong King” merchandise has made its way into Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
‘The Lion King’ Merchandise
At Island Mercantile on Discovery Island, we found new “The Lion King” apparel, a throw blanket, a beach towel, a puzzle, and a figure.
Directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, the original animated “The Lion King” was released in U.S. theaters on June 15, 1994. It’s based loosely on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” from a screenplay by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and Linda Woolverton.
It stars Matthew Broderick, Joseph Williams, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and Jason Weaver as Simba’s adult, adult singing, young, and young singing voices respectively. The cast also includes Jeremy Irons as Scar; James Earl Jones as Mufasa; Moira Kelly, Sally Dworsky, Niketa Calame, and Laura Williams as Nala; Nathan Lane as Timon; Ernie Sabella as Pumbaa; Robert Guillaume as Rafiki; Rowan Atkinson as Zazu; Madge Sinclair as Queen Sarabi; and Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin, and Jim Cummings as hyenas.
Sweatshirt – $54.99
This new crew neck sweatshirt is red-orange. Simba as an adult is pictured in silhouette against a yellow sun. The film’s title is at the top of the design.
Sweatpants – $49.99
The sweatpants are black. Down one leg are yellow outline images of Timon, Pumbaa, and Simba.
Timon is a meerkat. He and his best friend, Pumbaa the warthog, take center stage in “The Lion King 1½,” a sequel that takes place during the events of “The Lion King.” It’s inspired by Tom Stoppard’s “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,” a sequel to “Hamlet.”
Timon and Pumbaa also starred in the TV series “The Lion King’s Timon & Pumbaa” from 1995 to 1999.
In the 2019 “The Lion King” remake, Timon and Pumbaa are voiced by Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen respectively.
On the sweatpants, Simba is pictured as an adult.
In the remake, he is voiced by Donald Glover as an adult and JD McCrary as a child.
Below the pocket is a printed version of “The Lion King” logo in an orange border. The border features triangles and dots in an African-inspired pattern.
T-Shirt – $34.99
This T-shirt is a light blue color. A white pattern of dots, lines, and deltas is all over.
Young Nala, young Simba, and Zazu the hornbill are pictured on the chest in full color. A blue border features white zig-zags, red deltas, and yellow triangles. The corners are yellow with red flowers.
A Zazu shoulder plush was already released as part of “The Lion King” 30th anniversary collection.
Youth T-Shirt – $26.99
Young Nala and Simba are also on this youth T-shirt. They’re set against a red and pink background of foliage. The border features red zig-zags through yellow-gold shapes.
Nala and Simba are distinguishable by Nala’s more tan coloring and blue-green eyes, and Simba’s fluffy hair and whiskers.
The shirt is white with striped orange and red ruffle sleeves.
Throw Blanket – $69.99
The throw blanket comes folded up and wrapped in a yellow-gold ribbon. It features Simba’s red silhouette against an orange and cream pattern.
The throw is 50 inches by 60 inches or 127 centimeters by 152 centimeters. The tag includes the 30th anniversary logo for “The Lion King.”
Towel – $29.99
The beach towel features an all-over pattern of Timon, Pumbaa, young Simba, and young Nala. They are pictured in different playful positions.
Behind the characters are blue, neon yellow, and purple leaves. The background is black.
Puzzle – $39.99
This wooden puzzle has 500 pieces and is appropriate for ages 3 and up. It depicts a poster for “The Lion King” featuring adult Simba, adult Nala, Rafiki, Timon, and Pumbaa. Mufasa’s face is in the blue sky above Pride Rock. “The Lion King” is at the top of the image.
There are also “unique character puzzle shapes.” The 30th anniversary logo for the film is also pictured on the box.
The completed puzzle is 24 inches by 17 inches or 60.96 centimeters by 43.18 centimeters.
Musical Figure – $129.99
This figure depicts Pumbaa, Timon, and young Simba as they appear during the “Hakuna Matata” number in the film. The base has a dark antique finish with green grass on top.
The three characters stand together with their mouths open in song. Timon and Pumbaa have their arms out.
In the film, Timon and Pumbaa cheer up a runaway Simba by telling him about “Hakuna Matata,” which means “No worries.” During the song’s montage, Simba grows up.
According to the box, the figure “makes sounds” — presumably the song “Hakanua Matata.”
Behind the trio are zig-zagging red shapes like jungle foliage or the sun’s rays.
The figure is approximately 9.84 inches by 9.84 inches by 7.87 inches or 25 centimeters by 25 centimeters by 20 centimeters.
Disney has teased the release of even more “The Lion King” merchandise this summer, during a 30th anniversary celebration of the film at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
