NEWS: Walt Disney Imagineering President Announces Plans to Step Down

Walt Disney Imagineering has some of the most brilliant and creative minds in the entertainment business.

Imagineering details in Magic Kingdom

Thanks to Imagineers, we have some of the most iconic theme park rides to ever exist, including Pirates of the Caribbean, Avatar: Flight of Passage, and most recently Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. Imagineers work tirelessly to create theme park rides, experiences, and even hotels that immerse guests in the Disney magic. Now, the head of Walt Disney Imagineering is stepping down.

Barbara Bouza, President of Walt Disney Imagineering, recently posted on Instagram that she would be stepping down from that role. She wrote, “It is bittersweet as I wrap up my work as President of Walt Disney Imagineering this month before I create an even bigger impact for the world.”

Bouza, a licensed architect, was recruited by The Walt Disney Company in 2020. In her Instagram post, she mentioned the challenges the company was facing at the time and how “humanity needed Disney more than ever.” She continued, “The world was trying to understand the impact of a global pandemic, business disruption, stay at home orders, a reckoning on race, and the growing political divide.”

“From there Imagineers endured the pressures of talent reductions, unprecedented hyper-escalation on projects, political crosshairs, and the need to make life changing decisions with their families around the relocation from California to Florida.

Bouza praised Imagineers for “relentlessly” creating through all of that what she considers “some of the most impactful projects in the history of The Walt Disney Company.” That success is now why Disney has recently committed $60 billion over the next 10 years to Disney Experiences. She also thanked her fellow Imagineers, past, present, and future. You can see the full statement below.

For now, it seems like Bouza is handing over the reins to Bruce Vaughn, Walt Disney Imagineering Chief Creative Officer. Bouza did not confirm whether Vaughn will take over as president. Instead, she stated, “WDI will be in excellent hands with my partner, Bruce Vaughn, Chief Creative Officer, who is an exceptional creative leader.
