Disneyland Resort Testing Facial Recognition Entry System

Disneyland Resort is testing a new facial recognition entry system and we were able to participate in a test on Wednesday.

Disneyland Resort Facial Recognition Test

Disney California Adventure entrance

New gates were installed at Disney California Adventure a few weeks ago. They’re on the far right end of the park’s entrance area. At least during testing, guests can’t use MagicBand+ at these gates, but there are MagicBand touchpoints.

Cast Member scanning phone ticket

Step one is a Cast Member scans a guest’s ticket on their phone to see if they have a photo in the system. If they don’t, the Cast Member takes their photo.

Guests using facial recognition entrance

Then, the guest approaches the gate. Here, they scan their ticket again. A camera above the mounted screen then scans your face to see if it matches the photo in the system.

When we were taking a photo of the screen, it detected “too many faces.” We also had to take off our sunglasses for the photo validation to work.

Disney California Adventure clear gates open

Once your identity is confirmed, a pair of clear gates open, letting you into the park.

Though the system is supposed to streamline the entry process, we found it took much longer than usual. Hopefully, bugs will be worked out during testing if Disney decides to move forward with this system.

Walt Disney World Resort tested facial recognition technology back in March 2021. The system was similar to the one at Disneyland Resort but without clear gates. The test ended in May 2021 and the system was never permanently installed.

Universal Orlando Resort began using facial recognition technology for entry last year and it remains in use. Their third park, Epic Universe, will also use facial recognition.

‘Abbott Elementary,’ ‘Golden Girls,’ and ‘Futurama’ Photo Ops & Hulu on Disney+ Pins Available at Disney Springs

In honor of the launch of Hulu on Disney+, three photo ops inspired by Hulu titles and a set of exclusive new pins are available at Disney Springs.

The photo ops are located outside the AMC movie theater at the exit of Orange Garage closest to Planet Hollywood. Cast Members man the space and hand out pins.

When we first stopped by, there were stanchions set up for a queue. These were later taken down so guests could walk up and take pictures at their leisure.

The photo ops sit on a square featuring the logos for Hulu and Disney+. Footprints show where to stand to take a good photo.

An “Abbot Elementary” photo op includes two school desks and chairs in front of a chalkboard backdrop.

A white table and chairs are in front of a backdrop featuring the main characters of “The Golden Girls.”

The shows represented here are all available to stream on Hulu. With Hulu on Disney+, bundle subscribers can now view Hulu titles directly on Disney+.

The third photo op is inspired by “Futurama.” The backdrop features the Planet Express spaceship. The table and chairs in front of the backdrop are inspired by the ship’s interior.

To receive a pin set, guests must take a survey about Hulu and Disney+. Taking the survey also enters them for a chance to win a $100 Disney+ gift card. There’s a QR code to scan for access to the survey.

After completing the survey, guests can show their proof of completion to a Cast Member to receive a pin set. The set includes two Mickey ear hat pins. One pin features the green Hulu logo while the other features the white Disney+ logo. The backing card reads, “The Perfect Pair.”
