It looks like The Star Wars film, “Rogue Squadron” may see the light of day, as director Patty Jenkins has announced she is back on the previously-shelved project.
In an interview on the podcast “Talking Pictures,” Patty Jenkins revealed she is once again working on a script for “Rogue Squadron.” Jenkins, who previously directed “Wonder Woman” and “Wonder Woman 1984,” was set to work on a third film in the franchise, however that fell apart after a restructuring at DC Studios. Thus, Jenkins has been freed up to work on “Rogue Squadron.” Jenkins shares that she finalized a deal with Lucasfilm at the start of the strike, meaning, “I now owe a draft of ‘Star Wars.’ So we will see what happens there.” Read her comment below.
“When I left ‘Star Wars’ to do ‘Wonder Woman 3,’ and I started working on that, we talked about, ‘Well, maybe I’ll come back to “Star Wars” after “Wonder Woman 3,”‘ so we started a deal for that to happen. When ‘Wonder Woman 3’ then went away, Lucasfilm and I were like ‘Oh, we’ve got to finish this deal.’ We finished the deal right as the strike was beginning, so I now owe a draft of ‘Star Wars.’ So we will see what happens there. Who knows. [Lucasfilm] have a hard job in front of them of, ‘What’s the first movie they’re going to do?’ They have other directors who have been working, but I am now back on doing ‘Rogue Squadron.’ We’ll see what happens. We need to get it to where we’re both super happy with it.”

Originally announced in 2020 at a Disney Investor Day event, Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, described “Rogue Squadron” as follows:
“This story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride. The legend of Rogue Squadron has been long beloved by Star Wars fans and will move us into a future era of the Galaxy. “

Scheduled for a December 2023 release, the film was first delayed, before being entirely removed from the Walt Disney Company film slate. In May of 2023, Kennedy shared an update that “Rogue Squadron” was still “on the books,” however it’s worth noting that Lucasfilm has made no recent official announcement about the film.
This news comes at an interesting time, as during a recent Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference Q&A, Disney CEO Bob Iger discussed improving the Disney film slate, which has included cutting some previously-slated projects. “We’ve actually made those tough call,” Iger shared. “We’ve not been that public about it, but we’ve killed a few projects already that we just didn’t feel were strong enough.”
