Carousel of Progress has had another malfunction. This time, John Progress’ hand didn’t fall off and no squirrels ran through the set — but a scene simply didn’t work at all.
Carousel of Progress Scene Malfunctions
TikTok users Kayla and Mark Alan Hemphill (@kaylaandmarkalan) shared the following video of the ride’s second scene set in the 1920s. Nothing in the scene was moving, including John and Rover the dog. To add to the awkwardness, only John’s dialogue track was playing, so he seemed to be talking to himself.
The audience seemed to enjoy the unique version of the scene, laughing when John said, “I heard that!” in response to nothing and clapping when the scene wrapped up.
Carousel of Progress is one of Disney’s oldest rides, although it has seen several updates over the years. It was originally created for the General Electric Pavilion at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. After the fair, it moved to Tomorrowland in Disneyland, where it ran from 1967 to 1973. It was replaced by America Sings in 1974 and moved to Magic Kingdom in 1975, where it has remained. It was significantly updated for each move, and then again in 1981, 1985, and 1993. Only minor updates, like the audio-animatronics getting new costumes, have been made since.
