Almost three years after a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake was announced, Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch confirmed the game is still in development.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake
The original Knights of the Old Republic video game was developed by BioWare and published by LucasArts. It was released in 2003 and takes place nearly 4,000 years before the “Star Wars” films. The player character is a Jedi trying to defeat Darth Malak, a Sith Lord attacking the Galactic Republic. Through decisions made during the game, player characters align more with the Light Side or Dark Side, affecting the abilities they gain.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake was announced for PlayStation 5 in 2021 after spending three years already in development. Aspyr, owned by Embracer Group, was originally creating the remake. Development paused and then Saber Interactive, also owned by Embracer, took over. Last month, Embracer sold Saber to Beacon Interactive, but said they would still publish some Saber games including a “previously announced AAA game based on a major license” — presumably Knights of the Old Republic.
Karch told IGN this week that the remake is still “alive and well” after the developer’s move.
It’s clear and it’s obvious that we’re working on this. It’s been in the press numerous times. What I will say is that the game is alive and well, and we’re dedicated to making sure we exceed consumer expectations.

Karch did not share a timeline for release. During an investor call after the announcement that Embracer sold Saber, Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors implied the remake was still a long way off. (via IGN)
