Critically Endangered Addax Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge has a new baby addax — a critically endangered species — on the Sunset Savanna.

Two-month-old Julien has joined the resort’s addax herd. The baby stands just over two feet tall. He was born to mom Juniper and dad Allen, and his name is an ode to them. Julien is the first male calf born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Scott Terrell, Director of Animal & Science Operations for Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, wrote about the newborn for Disney Parks Blog.

At Disney, every animal birth is important but there’s something extra special about an odds-defying, critically endangered baby addax we welcomed just in time for Mother’s Day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge!

Baby addax, a species of antelope with curly horns and gray, white, and tan fur

Addax is a species of antelope known for the curly horns that calves are born with. They face possible extinction with less than 100 in the wild and just over 180 in managed care across organizations accredited by the Associations of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). There are just 21 AZA-accredited institutions with addax.

Walt Disney World follows AZA Species Survival Plans, welcoming a variety of newborn animals. Terrell writes that Julien’s birth “is just one example of many that exemplifies the success of our continued work to breed at-risk animals.”

BouTiki Reopens With Water Damage After Major Leak at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

BouTiki and Kona Cafe at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort are back open after a leak on Wednesday morning.

BouTiki & Kona Cafe

Entrance to the "boutique" shop with a polynesian-style carved wooden decor and shoppers browsing inside.

Kona Cafe seemed to be the source of the leak, with a small waterfall pouring through the floor/ceiling into the store below. The leak has been fixed although the area is not quite clear of water.

Close-up view of an aged wooden floor with varying shades of brown and distinct grain patterns.

As we walked through BouTiki, we could feel the floorboards warping beneath our feet. Water oozed out from between the boards.

Wooden floorboards with a visible stain and small blue marks next to a gray boundary strip.

It was a minimal amount of water that we don’t think would cause safety issues in the short term. Hopefully, Disney will dry out the floor overnight and prevent further damage.

A clothing store with colorful shirts displayed, a wet floor sign in the foreground, and people shopping in the background.

There was one “Caution: Floor May Be Wet” sign. Thankfully, there are no bad smells.

Interior of a tropical-themed shop with a high thatched roof, red ornamental beams, and spotlights, displaying various merchandise.

The ceiling seems to have miraculously been saved. We could see no damage. In the video shared by TikTok user @jportwood19, the water seemed to pour through light fixtures.
