New Concept Art, Activity Details, & More for Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point

At a media event on May 2, 2024 Disney shared new information about Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point

Lookout Cay concept art

There will be many differences between Lookout Cay and Disney Cruise Line’s original private island destination, Castaway Cay. The two locations are meant to complement each other, with Castaway Cay having a fictional backstory, while Lookout Cay is a real place at Lighthouse Point.

However, it’s not all new, as those familiar with visiting Castaway Cay will find that Lookout Cay’s Serenity Bay, family spaces, and dining pavilions will operate similarly. Some Disney Cruise Line sailings will stop at both islands. Lookout Cay will open on June 6.

Lookout Cay concept art for Junkanoo Rush Out

A major focus of Lookout Cay will be Junkanoo, an annual Bahamian festival with vibrant colors, joyous music, and parades. Goombay Cultural Center, named after a traditional Bahamian style of music, will have a Junkanoo workshop where guests can learn about the festival and make crafts, such as a headpiece that they can wear to a Junkanoo celebration.

A 20-member musical group will parade around parts of the island in a parade known as a “Rush Out” in the Junkanoo tradition. You can see this in the concept art above.

In addition, original characters will be scattered around the island to add to the Junkanoo celebration. Junkanoo also plays a large part in the merchandise collection for the private island.

Disney characters, including donald, daisy, mickey, minnie, goofy, and chip 'n' dale, dressed in vibrant, tropical outfits, stand together on a beach.

More details were shared about the previously-released Mickey & Friends character costumes designed by acclaimed Bahamian fashion designer, Theodore Elyett. This marks the first time in history that a celebrity designer has designed all eight of the characters’ costumes.

Each of the characters will have straw integrated into their look, as it is a major industry in the Bahamas. Tying further into the culture, Mickey’s shorts feature a Junkanoo conch print, and Pluto’s items reflect all of the other characters’ costumes and motifs.

As far as activities, the Play-Play Pavilion will feature the Disney Fun in the Sun Beach Bash, with music by Bahamian artist, Victor Johnson. Guests will be treated to versions of songs like “I2I” and the “Rescue Rangers Theme,” done with Bahamian beats. There will also be games, including Goofy’s Limbo.

Lookout Cay building structure

The focus of the island is natural beauty and Bahamian art. It begins with arriving guests crossing a bridge over coral reefs. It can also be seen in Lookout Cay’s huge structural roofs inspired by shells on larger buildings, and smaller buildings in the colors, textures, and patterns of Junkanoo. Inside each building, guests can find murals and art pieces done by Bahamian artists. This art will continue in the private cabanas on the beach.

Enjoying and preserving the natural environment of Lookout Cay is also a key factor of the island, with only 16% of the property being used and plenty of conservation efforts being implemented. This includes the tracking of crabs to facilitate healthy cohabitation.

The nature trail on the island passes cliffs and birds of the Bahamas. Kids can learn about animals of the Bahamas with “Play in Nature” at Sebastian’s Cove, a collaboration with National Geographic Kids. The family water play area will be called “Rush Out Gush Out,” a nod to Junkanoo.

One activity that will be available to teens and tweens is making five different sand creature creations. These guests can take photos with them before restoring the beach to its natural state. The team at Lookout Cay partnered with the Walt Disney World team that makes park sand sculptures to bring this activity to life. Additionally, guests will be able to participate in the “Seek and Find” hunt to locate 80 items on the island.

The activities don’t end with Lookout Cay — guests are encouraged to leave the private portion of the island and see the rest of the non-private landscape. Offered excursions will take guests out to local communities where Disney is working with emerging businesses.

Despite being called Lighthouse Point, there is no actual lighthouse on the island. Instead, there is a light station that guests will be able to view.

6 Things Pop Century Experts Would Never, Ever Do in Disney World

Pop Century Hotel experts would NEVER make these rookie mistakes!

Pop Century Resort

Disney’s Pop Century resort is one of the most popular resorts at Walt Disney World. The value resort has one of the most interesting histories of any of Disney resorts, and has developed a devoted fanbase thanks to its theming, decor, Skyliner access, and comparative affordability. There are certain things these Pop Century experts would never do.

Request a Room in the 90s Section

While from a theming and decor standpoint, the 1990s section of Pop Century is arguably one of the resort’s coolest — seriously, the gigantic laptop with a permanent 1999 homepage sends our nostalgia sense into overdrive — it’s also arguably the least convenient area at the resort to stay. It’s far from both the Classic Hall (AKA the lobby building where the food court and bus stops are located) as well as the Skyliner station.

90s Nostalgia

Instead, request a room in the 60s section. There may be a preferred room charge, but it’s worth it as this section is within a short walk to both the Classic Hall and the Skyliner station.

Fold Down the Second Bed Unless Necessary

Some of Pop Century’s rooms contain a Queen-size bed as well as a Queen-size pull down bed. Now, if a traveler has a party size that requires pulling down the second bed, then they absolutely need to. However, if they only require one bed, leaving the pull down in the “up” position gives a ton of space to move around the room, and generally makes it feel much larger.

This table becomes a bed

Head to the Skyliner When it FIRST Opens

The first of two Skyliner entries on our list. It may be tempting to head to Skyliner as early as possible, however this can be a mistake. Crowds tend to gather early, leading to LONG and often sprawling lines. Instead, wait about 10 minutes after opening, as the system moves fast enough that even during a high demand time the line will have dissipated somewhat by then.

Skyliner Station

Not Use the Skyliner to Get to EPCOT or Hollywood Studios

The Skyliner is one of the biggest perks to staying at Pop Century, as the reliable system provides a quick and aesthetically pleasing way to head to both EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, as well as several other Disney hotels. There’s no reason to either drive or ride share to either of those parks if the Skyliner is available.

Plan to Eat at the Food Court after Staying at Magic Kingdom Until Close

While getting to EPCOT or Hollywood Studios from Pop Century is quite convenient, traveling back and forth to the Magic kingdom is… not. The park and hotel are far apart, and — especially at closing — the buses are packed, as are the transportation options to get to the Transportation and Ticket Center for anyone thinking of driving or ride sharing. In other words, the odds are slim at best that a guest would be able to stay at the Magic Kingdom until the end of the park’s day and make it back to Pop Century in time to grab dinner at the Everything Pop food court.

Sometimes Disney transportation just isn’t fast enough

Skip the Tie-Dye Cheesecake

Speaking of the food court, no Pop Century expert would stay at the hotel without enjoying its trademark tie-dye cheesecake dessert at least once!

It’s just FUN!

Pop Century is one of Walt Disney World’s most beloved resorts, especially at the value level, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t mistakes to avoid when staying there. Stay tuned to DFB for more Walt Disney World hotel tips.
