Movie Based on Disney’s Club 33 Reportedly in Development

A live-action film based on Club 33, a members-only organization first envisioned by Walt Disney, is reportedly in development at Disney.

Club 33 Movie

Club 33 at Disney World

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a film based on Club 33 is heading to the big screen. The movie will reportedly be set in a fantastical world. Per THR, it has a similar tone to “Clue” and “Night at the Museum.”

In the film, the main character, Kim, is an aspiring detective in New York who gets an invitation to join Club 33. The fictional Club 33 is a “magical and exclusive dining club that exists outside of time and space,” with members that include historical figures from the past. When one of them is murdered, Kim is put on the case.

A script for the film is being written by screenwriter Darren Lemke, whose previous work includes “Kung Fu Panda 4,” “Shazam!,” and the 2015 and 2018 “Goosebumps” films. The film will be produced by director and producer of “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Stranger Things,” Shawn Levy, along with his partners, Dan Levine and Dan Cohen, all of whom make up the 21 Laps Entertainment production company.

Club 33

Club 33 at Tokyo Disney Resort

Founded in 1967, the first Club 33 location to open was above Pirates of the Caribbean in Disneyland Park. Walt Disney did not live to see the opening of Club 33, but he was inspired to start it after seeing the executive lounges offered at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. Since its inception, various Club 33 locations have opened at Disney Parks around the world. The elusive membership, which can often include a years-long waitlist and costs thousands of dollars, grants access to the in-park clubs, exclusive events, and other offerings.

Disney has put out several films based on locations found in the Disney Parks. Most recently, we’ve seen live-action retellings of The Haunted Mansion in 2023 and Jungle Cruise in 2021. A reboot of the most notable park-to-movie adaptation, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film franchise, is currently in the works.

What do you think of the plot for the potential Club 33 film? Is it one you’d be interested in watching? Let us know in the comments below.
