8 Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Ride Experiences We’ve Had in Disney World

Okay, it’s time to have a real talk about Disney World.

Rise of the Resistance

Yes, Disney World IS The Most Magical Place on Earth, but let’s just say some things have happened…and well, we’ve been through some things. We’ve had some very questionable drinks and snacks, obviously (because we do try to eat EVERYTHING). We’ve also had some strange experiences. But let’s talk about rides. We’ve also had some pretty bad ride experiences. So we’ve decided to share those with you (because we’re suckers for punishment).

Multiple evacuations from Rise of the Resistance

Rise of the Resistance is one of Disney’s most technologically advanced rides. You know what that means? It means this ride can have a lot of technical problems, resulting in downtime. Well, we were SO stoked to ride Rise of the Resistance one day and the first time, we made it all the way to the part where the Resistance has captured you and they’re corraling you through their ship. Then the ride closed and we were evacuated.

Rise of the Resistance closes a LOT

We came back to ride later, and we made it all the way to the point where you actually get on the ride vehicles. Then the ride vehicles didn’t move and…yep, we were evacuated again. Like they say, though, the third time’s the charm, but by that time, we just wanted to get through the whole ride and get on with the rest of our day, much of which had been wasted. This is what happens with this ride often, though. So be prepared for down time and make sure you know what to do if you’ve paid for the Individual Lightning Lane option for it.

Slinky Dog taking up the entire day

Slinky Dog Dash is usually a must in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but we had one incident where we regretted even trying to ride it. So we got up early and rope dropped Hollywood Studios and headed straight to get in line for Slinky Dog Dash, which can have long lines even first thing in the morning. We waited in line for a while, and then it closed. Again, ride closures happen. But it stayed closed for almost half a day, and we wasted a lot of time just trying to ride it.

If this happens to you, it might be best to just throw your hands up in the air and choose not to ride something that seems to be having a lot of problems. There are plenty of other things to do in Hollywood Studios, but if it is a priority, you’ll just have to understand that it could seriously impact the rest of your day.

Finally noticing a gruesome detail in Haunted Mansion

So we’ve been on Haunted Mansion a LOT and have ridden it multiple times. But there was a point where we had never looked up during the stretching room scene. So you know that part where the Ghost Host says “Of course, there’s always my way?” The room went dark and lightning struck, and we finally looked up and saw the body hanging from a rope.

Is this haunted room actually stretching?

So we actually screamed because we did NOT expect that (yes, it’s a shame we’d never noticed it before, but it left us feeling unsettled). We’re genuinely surprised that Disney has still chosen to stick with this VERY DARK detail, but it certainly adds that spooky effect to the mansion.

Getting stuck on “it’s a small world”

Okay, a lot of people will refer to “it’s a small world” as the worst ride in Disney World, but we actually think it’s charming…mostly. That is until something goes wrong and the next thing you know, the ride is stuck and you’re watching dolls dance around and sing that song over and over and over and over.

Imagine 90 minutes of this over and over

We were once stuck on “it’s a small world” for 90 minutes, and let’s just say we never want to ride it — or hear that song — again. We still have nightmares about it… If you do get stuck on the ride, well, you just have to wait until Cast Members instruct you on what to do next.

Primeval Whirl

There used to be a ride in Disney’s Animal Kingdom in DinoLand, U.S.A. called Primeval Whirl. It was a spinning roller coaster that was so intense it earned the nickname “Primeval Hurl.” We don’t even have any specific stories about this ride, except that it was ALWAYS a bad ride experience.

Primeval Whirl was demolished in 2021, and we might have held a party celebrating its demise.

Body slamming on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness, and it’s earned that title because it notoriously swings you around in the ride vehicle that you’re going to end up practically on top of whoever you’re seated with. We once had an issue where a much smaller sibling was on the wrong side of the vehicle and the ride kept throwing us around so we kept body slamming us into that sibling.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

This is also the very reason we do not ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad with strangers. That is just TOO awkward, thank you very much. So make sure you ride this one with someone you’re very comfortable with.

Almost getting sick on Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is a 3D ride, and normally, those kind of rides don’t bother us. Star Tours? No problem! Toy Story Midway Mania — we love it! But there is something just nausea-inducing about the 3D images on Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure that nearly made us throw up on the ride.

So we’re warning you that this ride could cause motion sickness, even if you don’t normally get motion sickness on other similar rides. The best thing you can do is what we did: close your eyes and wait until it’s over. Closing your eyes will help reset your equilibrium.

Getting rained on while riding Slinky Dog Dash

So we finally managed to get on Slinky Dog Dash after waiting a bit and we’re sitting in the ride vehicle when it suddenly begins pouring (yep, one of those random Florida storms). But the ride starts up and gets going, so not only are we getting soaked, but each rain pellet feels like a little knife slicing into us because we’re going so fast.

Not so much fun in the rain

Then, there’s those few minutes where the ride vehicle sits outside the unloading station and we had to continue to get soaked until we pulled back into the station to exit the ride. Pro tip: always check the weather ahead of time and know that if there is even a remote chance of rain in Disney World, it very well could rain. Otherwise, just grin and bear it and laugh about it later, like we did.

8 Things You’ll Regret Not Having With You When It Rains In Disney World

So there you have it: Those times when we had a bad time on Disney World rides. Granted, a bad day in Disney World is better than a day anywhere else, so when you look at it from that perspective, it’s not that bad at all.
