The eland baby is a girl and mom Celo’s first calf. Both the mom and calf are doing great, Penning wrote, and bonding in a backstage barn.

Elands are a type of antelope found in East and Southern Africa. The species is not endangered but the population of common elands is dwindling and giant elands are vulnerable according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Elands are protected under the United States Endangered Species Act and regulated in international trade by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

Penning also announced the birth of a Hartmann’s mountain zebra foal at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. Guests will be able to see both babies on the Lodge’s savanna soon.
