After just over a week in theaters, “Inside Out 2” is officially the highest-grossing North American release of 2024 so far.
The film has pulled $285.7 million domestically, passing “Dune: Part Two,” which made $282M. (via Variety)
It already broke the year’s record for Thursday night previews. It then had the second-largest opening weekend for an animated film, following “Incredibles 2.” As the week went on, “Inside Out 2” had the highest-grossing Tuesday ever for an animated film, beating the Incredibles sequel.
With no sign of slowing down, “Inside Out 2” may have the biggest second weekend of any animated film. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” currently holds that record with $92.3M made during its second weekend.
The Pixar film has grossed a global total of $545.1M. Its worldwide total is expected to be over $650M by the end of this weekend. (via Deadline)
It’s well on its way to beating the box office of the first “Inside Out,” which totaled $858.8M globally.
It’s Pixar’s first real box office success since “Toy Story 4” in 2019, which made $1.073B. COVID-19 hit the U.S.A. just days after Pixar’s “Onward” was released. “Soul” and “Luca” were then Disney+ exclusives (although have since had limited theatrical releases). “Turning Red” was released simultaneously on Disney+ and in limited theaters. “Lightyear” was their theatrical comeback in 2022 but it grossed only $226.4M — a number “Inside Out 2” has already beaten. “Elemental” in 2023 made $496.4M.
“Inside Out 2” is certified fresh with a critic score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score is a positive 96%. Read our review.
This could be a turning point for Pixar, who indicated that the success of “Inside Out 2” may lead to more sequels and spin-offs with guaranteed audiences.
