“Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors” presented by the George W. Bush Institute has opened two days ahead of schedule at The American Adventure in EPCOT.
The tribute displays over 60 oil paintings of service members and veterans who have served since 9/11. The exhibit is on display in the rotunda of the American Adventure, rather than the American Heritage Gallery. The gallery closed in May, and previously hosted “Creating Tradition: Innovation and Change in American Indian Art.”
Every painting is of a service member or veteran who President Bush has gotten to know personally following his time in office.
President Bush wrote a story about every person depicted in his paintings to give each painting even more of a personal touch. These stories are on display for guests to read.
Each portrait features a placard listing the veteran’s name, rank, and years of service.
This painting depicts veteran Justin Bond on crutches.
The exhibit also includes “Letters to the President”, a display featuring personal letters from veterans who served as the inspiration for some of the paintings.
Some of the letters contained photographs that would inspire President Bush’s artwork.
The painting above depicts President Bush’s artistic vision of the photograph of him and Melissa Stockwell dancing.
A book containing the paintings and stories of the veterans who inspired them is also on display.
The exhibit also includes information and resources created to support post-9/11 veterans and their families, such as Check-In, which gives veterans and their families access to no-cost, high-quality, mental and brain health care.
