Prepare to eat like Pumbaa, Lion King fans.
In preparation for the upcoming 30th anniversary of The Lion King, Disney has introduced five NEW desserts themed to the film at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. There’s a new ice cream sandwich, a Simba-themed cookie, a Zazu DOLE Whop float, and more! Let’s get eating!
The Zazu Ice Cream Sandwich
Available for $7.29 at Tamu Tamu refreshments, the Zazu Ice Cream Sandwich is vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two blue cake-coated sugar cookies with a Zazu medallion on top.
While this dessert may seem a bit basic, we really enjoyed it! We’re big fans of the ice cream sandwiches at Dino-Bite Snacks, and this one was similar.
The cookies were moist with a hint of lemon, the ice cream was cold and refreshing, and the treat is large enough for TWO people to split.
We’d definitely recommend it — in fact, we thought this was the BEST new treat of the five we tried today!
Simba Paw Cookie
While the Zazu Ice Cream Sandwich was basic but enjoyable, the Simba Paw cookie was simply basic.
It’s a shortbread cookie covered in fondant that’s sure to melt in the Florida sun.
While the cookie is cheap ($4.50) and plentiful (available at a bevy of popcorn and snack stands), it’s essentially a run-of-the-mill shortbread cookie.
Still, big fans of The Lion King might enjoy it! And it could be a hit with kids who like treats with simple flavors and fun theming.
Rightful Ruler Cupcake
The Rightful Ruler Cupcake, available at both Restaurantosaurus and Pizzafari for $6.29, is a red velvet cupcake with chocolate buttercream and cookies and cream cheese filling, topped with a white chocolate medallion.
Our take here was a simple one: This is very sweet. The red velvet cupcake is solid — moist with a good crumb. It’s a solid cake. The cookies and cream filling has a rich, sweet cream cheese taste.
The chocolate buttercream frosting on top is good, but there’s just a ton of it to get that domed effect and make it pretty. That buttercream and the cookies and cream filling combine into a bit of overkill sweetness.
Red velvet fans will like this, but we’d likely recommend splitting it because it’s incredibly sweet.
You Follow Old Rafiki Cheesecake
Available at Harambe Market for $6.49, this passion fruit-mango cheesecake features a coconut-lime crust, vanilla bean chantilly, and a chocolate medallion featuring a meditating Rafiki.
We found this snack pretty to look at…but very hard to eat! The coconut-like crust was almost too hard, to the point that we broke a plastic knife and fork trying to cut into it. Eventually, we resorted to eating the rest of the layers, then picking the crust up to eat like a cookie.
Now, the crust was delicious — crispy with lots of coconut and a hint of the lime flavor. It just should be a cookie instead of a crust for this dessert, in our opinion.
Also, the item is billed as a passion fruit-mango cheesecake, but what we tasted was more like a plain cheesecake base, with a passion fruit-mango glaze on top. The glaze had the consistency of a jelly.
The vanilla bean chanttily cream was light and delicious. The Rafiki meditating medallion on the top is normal white chocolate.
Zazu DOLE Whip Lime and Coconut Float
This DOLE Whip float costs $6.49 and features lime-flavored DOLE whip swirled into Sprite with coconut and blue curaçao syrup. You can get it at Trilo-Bites!
It’s supposed to come topped with a decorative white chocolate character medallion; however, we didn’t receive one as Cast Members said they didn’t have them yet.
Overall as we often do with lime DOLE Whip, we found the lime flavor a bit overpowering, as it dominated the other flavors coconut and blue curaçao, especially just tasting lime and Sprite.
It was fun and refreshing, and if you’re a big fan of lime, you’ll probably love this! But if you prefer more subtle flavors, you might want to stick to the regular DOLE Whip or DOLE Whip Pineapple Orange Soda Float over at Tamu Tamu Refreshments.
