After 15 Years of Reviewing Disney World Food, I’m Revealing the Most BIZARRE Trends

Can you believe it’s been 15 years? DFB has been eating Disney food for a decade and a half!

We’ve eaten just about everything under the sun, too, including many of our favorite foods. We’ve also eaten some questionable things, but we do it ALL for you. We’ve even done some really weird things just to get good photos to share with you of all the food we eat. So let’s just say we’ve seen Disney food trends come and go. There are some trends, though, that just seem a little bizarre.

Why were we so BLUE?

Disney World’s 50th Anniversary Celebration brought TONS of new snacks to the parks, the hotels, and Disney Springs. And let us tell you something: almost EVERY one of those snacks had some kind of blue on them. We spent much of the first few days of the 50th anniversary with our fingers and mouths dyed blue.

Blue cupcakes, blue drinks, blue domes, blue EVERYTHING. You name it — it was blue. Oh, we’re sorry, NOT blue. It was “Earidescent” (which is what Disney called it). Also, we’re still seeing the Earidescent sprinkles on snacks, so we’re guessing Disney World must’ve had a surplus.

Here’s a list of EVERYTHING we ate for Disney World’s 50th Anniversary

Croissants that are EXTRA

The most recent trend is croissants with fillings. We’re seeing these special croissants turn up EVERYWHERE. It all started with the Croissant Cookie, which was a croissant filled with cookie dough. Then the PB & J Croissant showed up and said, “Hold my beer.”

Since then, we’ve seen the Espresso Croissant (why get coffee AND a croissant when you can just have both in one snack?), another Cookie Dough Croissant, and Creme Brulee Croissant. Granted, these were all AMAZING, so it might be weird, but we’re all in when it comes to this trend. We’re pretty much expecting this year’s Halloween treats to include at least one croissant with pumpkin filling. But, hey, Pumpkin Spice Croissant? We might be okay with that.

Why is Disney freeze drying candy?

Another recent trend involves freeze dried Skittles. We think Disney let a kid into the kitchen and that’s how we’ve come up with this new snack. After it’s freeze-dried, Disney has been adding it to Krispie Treats, cake, caramel apples, drinks, and more.

You can also buy bags of freeze dried Skittles at Main Street Confectionery because why not? If you’re curious about how they taste, they kinda’ remind us of those astronaut snacks: the texture is kinda’ dry, but they still taste like Skittles.

If it’s popular, Disney is going to take it away

So there’s a trend going around that some of the most popular snacks in Disney World are being taken off menus. We’re not sure why Disney EVER thought taking hush puppies off the menu at Columbia Harbour House in Magic Kingdom was a good idea, but thanks to demand (and yes, we were VERY loud about it), those hush puppies returned. If it’s popular, it would make sense to keep it around, though, right?

They came back. Whew!

However, Disney also took the highly popular waffle sandwiches off the menu at Sleepy Hollow and replaced them with subpar Mickey waffle snacks that just aren’t the same. We’re still hoping for a snack miracle here.

Here’s our honest review of these new waffles

Why do mustaches = fathers?

Every Father’s Day, Disney World releases special treats and we’ll guarantee that about half of them have mustaches on them. Because nothing says “Dad” like a mustache? We’re not quite sure what the reasoning is except it’s a way to take existing snacks and make them seem more masculine and Dad-like? What is up with the mustaches?

We’ve seen mustaches on cupcakes, cheesecakes, pastries, and more. It’s never-ending on Father’s Day. It’s also weird, but highly amusing.

Why all the prix fixe menus?

It’s become more and more popular at Disney World restaurants to offer prix fixe menus, which means you’re forced into getting three courses, whether you’re super hungry or not. Your choices are also often fairly limited and unless you’ve been starving yourself for days, it’s probably going to be too much food.

California Grill’s Prix Fixe Menu

Even Be Our Guest, which once had a great a la carte counter service-like lunch menu went to prix fixe for both lunch and dinner. Who wants to eat three courses for lunch on a hot day in Florida? Several years ago, California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, also went to a prix fixe meal. When Space 220 opened in EPCOT, it only offered a prix fixe menu (so we often recommend going to the Space 220 Lounge instead).

If it’s alcoholic, it probably has Blue Curaçao in it

Disney loves Blue Curaçao and puts it in a lot of its drinks, especially if those drinks are blue. Remember all the blue food and snacks we mentioned above for the 50th anniversary? Almost all the cocktails had Blue Curaçao in them. But it seems to be popular in bars ACROSS the resort for a lot of things.

Guess what’s in it?

We do have to say, it’s not as prevalent as it once was, so it seems Disney has decided that it doesn’t need to go into every drink.

If we’re celebrating something, there’s a cupcake for it

From around 2018-2020, there was a cupcake for EVERYTHING. We don’t care what Disney was celebrating, it made sure that there was a cupcake for that occasion. Honestly, it’s still kinda’ a trend even now. There were MANY cupcakes for the 50th Anniversary Celebration. Earth Day also gets a few cupcakes. New Year’s Eve in Animal Kingdom? Make a cupcake and slap a year on an animal print Mickey. Proof:

New Year’s 2024 Cupcake

We guess it makes sense because cupcakes are pretty easy to make and create different designs for. They’re also pretty much liked by just about everyone, so we expect cupcakes will also be a part of special Disney celebrations.

So yes, we’ve seen some pretty bizarre food trends and we can’t wait to see what food trends come next. In the meantime, we’re going to go order another one of those Creme Brulee Croissants at Gaston’s Tavern and keep reporting on Disney food.
